West Brom closing in on Matt Phillips transfer after agreeing fee with QPRWest Brom expect to land one of their major transfer targets this week after agreeing a fee for QPR winger Matt Phillips.Baggies boss Tony Pulis missed out on Demba Ba to Shanghai Shenhua last month as they blew the Premier League club out of the water by giving the striker more than £100,000-a-week.
But frustrated Albion have now dug deep to out-bid Aston Villa, Leicester and Crystal Palace for Rangers’ winger Phillips.
Hawthorns officials aim to complete the transfer this week in a lucrative deal after offering more than Phillips' expected £7million valuation.
Phillips, 24, impressed last term with three goals and eight assists despite the Loftus Road outfit being relegated.
And Albion owner Jeremy Peace is prepared to splash out more than usual this summer as he is selling up.
Peace is usually very cost-conscious and unwilling to sanction huge signings and wages. But he has agreed to sell the club to a wealthy Chinese consortium who are set to take charge before the start of the new Premier League season.
Peace is keen to protect his legacy at Albion after 13 years at the helm in which he has established the club in the top-flight.
He is determined to leave boss Pulis, who has never been relegated before, with a competitive squad ahead of the new campaign.
Albion are also interested in Rangers’ striker Charlie Austin and defender Steven Caulker.
