Belgian player Gregory Mertens, 24, dies three days after suffering heart attack



Young Belgian defender Gregory Mertens has died three days after suffering a heart attack while playing for Lokeren reserves.

The 24-year-old had been in a critical state after collapsing on the field 20 minutes into a reserve game against Genk on Monday.

He was given emergency treatment on the pitch before being rushed to hospital where he was placed in an induced coma in an effort to save his life.

Mertens began his career at the country's most successful club, Anderlecht, before moving to Lokeren in January last year from Cercle Bruges.

He had been capped several times by Belgium at U21 level.

Lokeren said in a statement on their website: "Today something happened which no one could ever dare to predict. Much too soon, we are saying goodbye to Gregory Mertens.

"We are a football club. Everyone in and around the club lives and breathes football. But suddenly something happens which makes us realise football is just football. Today is such a time."

This is the second tragedy suffered this year by a young Belgian footballer following the death of 20-year-old Junior Malanda of German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg who died in a car crash in January.

Tim Nicot: Second Belgian player dies of cardiac arrest



Lower-league footballer Tim Nicot has become the second Belgian player to die of cardiac arrest in the past two weeks.
The 23-year-old left-back for fourth-tier Wilrijk-Beerschot was playing in a tournament in Hemiksem when he collapsed on Friday.
He was placed in an induced coma and his club confirmed his death on Monday.
In late April, Lokeren defender Gregory Mertens, 24, died after collapsing during a reserve game.
A club statement said Nicot "fought like a bear" and was the "idol of our supporters".
It described him as "always in a good mood, always making time for an umpteenth selfie with a fan".
Three years ago Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, then 23, suffered a cardiac arrest in an FA Cup game with Tottenham. He was "in effect dead" for 78 minutes but survived, although he never played again.
Nicot's team-mate Wesley Snoeys said: "So many questions. Always the same question comes up: why why why? You left us far too soon. I will never forget you. Forever in my heart."
Jef Snyders, another Wilrijk-Beerschot player, added: "Football will never be the same anymore. Rest in peace mate."
