Manchester United striker Federico Macheda's supposed insult of team-mate Wayne Rooney was taken out of context and was a product of mistranslation.
The 19-year-old is with the Italy U-21 team at the moment and was quoted by Thursday's la Gazzetta dello Sport as saying, "Rooney is a really great person, he always gives me advice, but he's a bit working class and vulgar."
The actual word that Macheda used while speaking in Italian was coatto, which is a Roman slang for 'unrefined and working class kid'. However, Macheda didn't mean it in a derogatory way but this was lost on the English-speaking media.
The former Lazio youngster also added "like me" after coatto but it was not picked up by the majority of the media.
