Africa Cup of Nations: Morocco calls for cancellation of 2015 tournament



Next year's Africa Cup of Nations is in doubt after the Moroccan Government called for the event to be cancelled due to the ongoing Ebola crisis in the continent.

The north Africa country is due to host the three-week competition which is scheduled to kick off on January 17.

Since the outbreak was first reported in west Africa in March of this year, more than 4,000 people have died from the virus.

Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria are four African countries desperately trying to contain the disease.

Morocco last staged the tournament 26 years ago but its government now want it cancelled for fear of the Ebola virus spreading to other parts of the continent.

Their health ministry have lodged a request with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to call off the biennial competition.          

The CAF has already moved qualifying matches from those countries worst-hit by the virus.

Africa Cup of Nations due to begin in January as planned

The Africa Cup of Nations will take place early next year as planned despite concerns over the ongoing threat of the Ebola virus.

Hosts Morocco had asked for the tournament to be moved to a later date due to concerns an influx of thousands of supporters into the area could spread the virus which has killed almost 5,000 people in West Africa.

But following a meeting with Moroccan officials, Confederation of African Football (CAF) media director Junior Binyam confirmed the event is still scheduled to take place as planned from January 17 to February 8.

"CAF confirms the dates of the tournament," said Binyam, adding that a second meeting has been scheduled for November 11 in CAF's Cairo headquarters to 'take the necessary decisions'.

"Any change of dates would be to the detriment of the CAF calendar, which must follow FIFA's international calendar.”

Morocco now have until November 8 to officially respond to CAF, according to Moroccan Football Federation spokesman Mohamed Makrouf.

2015 Nations Cup: Caf confirms Morocco will not host finals

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has confirmed that Morocco will not host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations as planned.

However Caf did not announce a new venue for the tournament that is due to take place between 17 January to 8 February.

Caf's executive committee also decided to expel Morocco  from taking part in the finals.

Morocco would have qualified for the finals as hosts.

Equatorial Guinea to host 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

Equatorial Guinea are the new hosts of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations after Morocco were removed for expressing fears about Ebola.

Morocco were thrown out after asking the Confederation of African football (CAF) to postpone the tournament, which is due to being on January 17th.

Equatorial Guinea were also thrown out of the tournament in July for fielding an illegible player during the qualifying process, but will now be reinstated as hosts.

The man who organised the 2008 event in Ghana has already expressed fears that starting the cup on time will be impossible.

Dr Kofi Amoah told the BBC: "It could be a sham. I don't think there is enough time for anyone to do it."

CAF President Issa Hayatou insists: "The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations must absolutely take place from 17 January to 8 February."

Africa Cup of Nations: Morocco banned after refusal to stage tournament

Morocco have been fined and suspended from the next two Africa Cup of Nations for pulling out of hosting this year's tournament.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has also been fined 1m US dollars and ordered to pay 9.12m US dollars in damages to the Confederation of African Football and their partners, CAF said in a statement.

Morocco had been due to host the tournament, but requested a postponement because of fears over the Ebola outbreak on the African continent. Equatorial Guinea stepped it at short notice to stage the event.

After a meeting of the CAF executive committee in Malabo on Friday, the federation said in a statement: "Morocco had based its request to postpone the tournament by a year on 10 October 2014, on allegations 'of the highest health risk'.

"Morocco cited the outbreak of the Ebola virus as a case of force majeure (act of God) in justifying its request for postponement, citing in particular the risk of contamination of its population because of anticipated fans' flows.

'Force majeure'

"CAF raised objections and inadmissibility of Morocco's request who were obliged to state their position of withdrawal from the organisation of the 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations by 11 November 2014.

"The executive committee considered that, contrary to what the Royal Moroccan Football Federation cited, force majeure cannot be accepted for the benefit of the federation."

The final for the 2015 tournament takes place on Sunday in Bata, on the west coast of Equatorial Guinea, between Ghana and the Ivory Coast.

Ghana's 3-0 semi-final win over Equatorial Guinea on Thursday was marred by violence in the stands where 36 Ghana supporters were hurt after coming under attack from home supporters, with 14 taken to hospital.

The Equatorial Guinea football federation was fined 100,000 US dollars and ordered to pay for the treatment of Ghana supporters who were injured by flying missiles at the Estadio de Malabo.

The CAF imposed the punishment on Friday, and announced a one-match suspended ground closure on the hosts.
