Wenger - Gabriel deal is very close

Arsène Wenger has confirmed that a deal for Gabriel Paulista should be completed in the coming days.

The Brazilian centre back would become the second signing of the January transfer window, after teenage midfielder Krystian Bielik joined the club earlier this month.

"It’s on the line and I think we’ll get over the line tonight and tomorrow," Wenger confirmed after Arsenal's 3-2 win against Brighton on Sunday.

Transfer news: Imminent Arsenal arrival Gabriel granted work permit ahead of move

Arsenal's deal for Villarreal defender Gabriel has moved a step closer after he was granted a work permit.

Gabriel is uncapped and was not entitled to an automatic permit, but Arsene Wenger said on Sunday he did not foresee a problem with the Brazilian's application.

And Sky sources understand that Arsenal can now press ahead with finalising a signing believed to be worth 18m euros to the Spanish club.

That sum is worth significantly less in sterling than it would have been on 7 January, and Arsenal stand to save £700,000 on the deal, according to sources in Spain.

Thierry Henry told Sky Sports News HQ on Sunday he believes his old club are signing "a special talent", but another former Arsenal striker has sounded a note of caution.

Charlie Nicholas told The Morning View: "He's getting better and better but I think he's still raw,.

"Villarreal play an Arsenal-type game - pass and move - but he's not a natural passing centre-back; he's a physical presence.

"Yes, Arsene Wenger has bought Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, but defensively, he likes to create rather than buy superstars. He can certainly nurture this lad but he needs time - maybe into next season."

Transfer news: Arsenal agree to loan Joel Campbell to Villarreal

Arsenal forward Joel Campbell is to join Villarreal on loan for the rest of the season, subject to a successful medical.

The Spanish club, whose centre-half Gabriel is on the verge of joining Arsenal permanently, announced the agreement on Tuesday.

Campbell previously had a spell in La Liga with Real Betis, and Villarreal will be the fourth club he has joined on loan since moving to London in the summer of 2011.

The Costa Rica international made his first senior Arsenal appearance in August but is yet to start a Premier League game,

and with Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil back from injury Arsene Wenger has sanctioned his departure.

Villarreal's statement made no mention of Gabriel, but the Brazilian defender is expected to complete his transfer to Arsenal this week.

The 24-year-old has already been given a work permit, and Sky sources understand he will cost Arsenal 18m euros.

Arsenal sign Gabriel from Villarreal

Arsenal have signed Brazilian defender Gabriel from Villarreal, with Joel Campbell agreeing a new long-term deal prior to a loan move to the La Liga side.

Primarily a centre back, 6ft 1in Gabriel (full name Gabriel Armando de Abreu) can also play at left back or right back.

This season the 24-year-old was an ever present in the Villarreal side that conceded just 17 goals in their first 19 La Liga matches and has gone 18 games unbeaten.

He began his career with Esporte Clube Vitória in Brazil, making his debut aged 19 before going on to feature more than 130 times for the Salvador club.

Arsenal have been granted a work permit for Gabriel and the transfer is subject to the completion of further registration and regulatory processes.

Gabriel said: “I came from a club that is not that big in Brazilian football. I went to Spanish football and that was another dream come true, to play in Europe.

A while ago I had a really huge desire to play in the Premier League, so since that point I put it in my head that I really wanted to do it.

I had a talk with my family and I told them that it was my dream to play in the Premier League. Getting here to such a big club is so gratifying.

“I am arriving at a big club and the fans can expect to find a Gabriel with a great will to help everyone.

Not just thinking of me as an individual, because to me that is not important. I care more about helping the team and my team-mates.

I want to help everyone, so the fans can expect a Gabriel that on the field has a lot of will to be able to help the team win important things.”

Costa Rica international Campbell, 22, is joining Villarreal on loan until the end of the season to gain more valuable first-team experience.

He has made three Arsenal starts and seven appearances from the bench this season.

This followed a highly-acclaimed display at the World Cup in Brazil, where he scored once and set up another as Costa Rica reached the last eight.

Campbell also enjoyed a successful spell on loan with Greek side Olympiacos last season, where he made 43 appearances and scored 11 goals.

Gabriel’s squad number will be revealed soon through Arsenal’s official Instagram account @Arsenal.
