Juventus' Sebastian Giovinco signs deal with Toronto FC, reports say



Juventus playmaker Sebastian Giovinco has signed a contract to join Toronto FC, according to reports in Canada.

Giovinco, 27, will join Toronto FC on a four-year contract worth $7 million a year, according to TSN, though the timing of the move remains unclear.
Toronto FC plans to announce Giovinco's new deal next week, the reports say.
If the contract figure is accurate, Giovinco would become the second-highest paid player in Major League Soccer behind Orlando City's Kaka.

The 5-foot, 5-inch Giovinco, who can play a variety of attacking positions, has found it difficult to break into the first team at Juventus this season,
where he must compete with the likes Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Morata.
He has started just two Serie A games under Massimiliano Allegri, while also appearing as a substitute in four more league games and three Champions League matches.
He scored twice in Juve's Coppa Italia match on Thursday.

However, Giovinco has made regular appearances for the Italian national team since Antonio Conte took over as coach after the World Cup.
He started in Italy's most recent friendly, against Albania in November.

The move comes just days after Toronto FC signed another Designated Player, U.S. international striker Jozy Altidore.
Together with midfielder Michael Bradley and Brazilian striker Gilberto, the addition of Giovinco would bring the number of Toronto's DPs to four,
meaning the club would have to release one -- most likely Gilberto -- if the league's new collective bargaining agreement does not increase the number of DPs per team.

TSN reported that Toronto will pay Juventus a "multi-million dollar transfer fee." The 27-year-old would be available on a free transfer once his Juventus contract expires this summer, but by moving now the MLS club would fend off competition from other interested parties in Europe.

Toronto FC have signed Juventus and Italy striker Sebastian Giovinco.

The 27-year-old, who has won 21 caps for his country, will join Jozy Altidore up front for the Major League Soccer side after they signed the US striker in exchange for Jermain Defoe.

Ex-Empoli and Parma forward Giovinco has played 131 times for Juve, but has only made 10 appearances this season.

His last appearance for the club was as a late substitute in Sunday's 4-0 win over Verona.

Giovinco will join Toronto, whose season starts in March, at the end of the Italian Serie A season.

Juventus forward Sebastian Giovinco has joined Toronto FC earlier than expected with the Italian club on Monday announcing his departure to Major League Soccer.

The 28-year-old has moved to the Canadian outfit ahead of the start of the MLS season in March.

Giovinco, who has won 21 caps for Italy, made his last appearance for Juve as a late substitute against Hellas Verona on January 18.

A statement from Juve read: "Giovinco leaves Juventus after a long adventure with the club lasting 19 years.

"Now the doors of the MLS open up for him.

"He will face a new professional and personal adventure with the Toronto FC jersey.

"From all of us our most sincere wishes for his new challenge."

Turin-born Giovinco was a product of Juve's youth system and broke into the first team in 2006.

A year later, he made his Serie A debut while on loan at Empoli before joining Parma for a two-year loan spell in 2010.

Giovinco, known as the 'Atomic Ant' because of his speed and diminutive stature, was part of the Juve side that won back-to-back Serie A crowns in the last two seasons.

He has played 131 times for Juve in total, but only made 10 appearances this season before sealing his move to Canada.
