Danny Welbeck: Arsene Wenger cryptic over striker's Arsenal move

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he would not have signed striker Danny Welbeck on transfer deadline day had he been in the country.
The 23-year-old left boyhood club Manchester United in a £16m switch to the Gunners while Wenger was away in Rome for a charity game.
Wenger said: "If I'd stayed at home he wouldn't be here now."
He refused to elaborate on that but added he initially wanted Welbeck on loan with an option to buy.
However, Wenger said he was "happy" to make the transfer permanent - though he would not reveal whether Welbeck will start against Manchester City on Saturday.

Wenger hit back at those questioning his decision to travel to Rome to take part in the first Interreligious Match for Peace at the Stadio Olimpico on deadline day.

"If I stayed at my home, Welbeck would not be here," he insisted. "That is the truth."

Wenger had not expected to sign Welbeck until early on deadline day and had initially only thought it would be on loan with the option of a permanent deal.
“I thought when they bought Falcao they had to let somebody go,” said Wenger. “I was not aware of the start that he would be available, it was quick, but I had no hesitation to do it.”
The decisions were being made, however, while Wenger was arriving in Italy to manage a team in the charity football match that had been proposed by Pope Francis. Wenger was brought up in a small village called Duttlenheim, near the French border with Germany, and is himself a Catholic.
“Meeting the Pope was an experience I did not want to miss,” he said. “He is a great person to meet because he shows humility and is available for everybody. He is a football fan. It was an invitation I accepted a long time ago and it was a game for peace and multi-religion understanding. I thought today, where we are a bit in front of an international religious war, it was a very important game.”
Welbeck signed a five year permanent deal and, asked if he would initially have preferred a loan, Wenger said: “With an option to buy yes. In the end, when it was a permanent transfer or loan with an option to buy, I was happy to buy permanently."
Asked to clarify if that meant he favoured a loan, Wenger added: "At start of day, he was only available on loan. At the end of the day, I agreed.”
Of deadline day – and the criticism of his trip to Rome – “Wenger said: “If I had not travelled that day, Welbeck would not be here. The coincidence made it. If I stayed in my home, Welbeck would not be here. I will tell you that story one day. That is the truth. We are in 2014, you can always be in touch.”
When he was pressed on what he meant, Wenger added: “The advantage of that day was I got up at 6am and was available the whole day.”
