Samuel Eto'o: Everton sign former Chelsea striker on free transfer

Everton have signed striker Samuel Eto'o on a two-year-deal after he was released by Chelsea last season.
The Cameroon international, 33, joins on a free transfer and links up with former Chelsea team-mate Romelu Lukaku, who signed for £28m this summer.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez said of Eto'o: "I met him and we had a very good chat. I was impressed about the hunger he still has.
"We are very excited and I think Everton is the perfect home for him."
Eto'o's contract with Chelsea expired at the start of July and he was not offered fresh terms by Blues boss Jose Mourinho.
Liverpool were in the running to sign him but instead opted for Mario Balotelli, leaving Martinez free to bring Eto'o to Goodison Park.
"I have been very impressed by the style of play Everton adopt," said Eto'o.
"I could see straight away that at this club I will have the opportunity to play football.
"I had the chance to speak with the manager over the last few days and we agreed that this was what we would do.
"I was impressed with his enthusiasm but also by the knowledge of football that Roberto Martinez carries, his vision of football and how he reads football.
I still think I can learn a great deal from him here."

Four-time African Footballer of the Year Eto'o scored 12 goals in 35 appearances for Chelsea after signing a one-year deal from Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala last August.
He could make his debut against his old club at Goodison on Saturday.
Eto'o began his career at Real Madrid but made his name at their arch-rivals Barcelona.
During his time at the Nou Camp, he won the Champions League twice - in 2006 and 2009 - scoring in both finals, as well as winning the Spanish league three times.
Eto'o moved to Inter Milan in 2009 as part of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's switch to Barcelona
and went on to win the Champions League again in his first season under Mourinho at the San Siro.

Eto'o closes in on move to Everton

Samuel Eto'o is closing in on a free transfer to Everton after Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign him.

Roberto Martinez's team have made an offer to the 33-year-old striker and are hopeful of agreeing terms.

Eto'o was in line for a move to Liverpool until Brendan Rodgers switched his attentions to Mario Balotelli, who is expected to complete a ?20 million switch to Anfield on Monday.

Martinez wants to sign an additional striker to provide proven back-up to ?36m spearhead Romelu Lukaku, with Manchester United's Danny Welbeck also being monitored.

Eto'o wants a two-year deal and is likely to lower his ?163,000-a-week wage demands if a contract with a Premier League club is spread over a longer term.

Asked about speculation linking Everton with Eto'o and Welbeck,

Martinez said: "There is a lot of money involved in those two. At the moment, if I am honest with you, I am looking at all the options.

"While the window is open we are looking at anyone who can help us and also looking at our injured players and seeing how they react.

"Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone will have a big say on how we end the window and I have an open mind about it.

"We are to going to make sure we make the right decisions."

Cameroon star Eto'o was released by Chelsea at the end of last season and is currently a free agent.

He’ll sign the contract on Wednesday. Claudio Vigorelli conducted the operation: the striker waited for Milan and Roma until the last minute,
but they weren’t too convinced. The next chapter of Eto’o career will be at Everton, he’ll try to keep scoring in the Premier League.

Everton are close to agreeing a two-year deal for striker Samuel Eto'o after he was released by Chelsea at the end of last season.
Liverpool had been interested in the 33-year-old Cameroon international.
But the completion of their £16m move for Mario Balotelli left the way clear for Everton to hold talks with Eto'o.
Talks are ongoing but Everton could sign Eto'o in time for him to be in line for a debut against his old side at Goodison on Saturday.
Everton have already signed Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea for £28m this summer and taken Christian Atsu on loan from the west London outfit.
Eto'o's contract with Chelsea expired at the start of July and he was not offered fresh terms by Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

Transfer news: Everton close to deal for Samuel Eto'o

Everton are close to completing a deal for Samuel Eto’o, according to Sky sources.

The 33-year-old Cameroon international has been linked with a number of Premier League sides this summer,

but Everton are expected to secure the striker on a two-year contract after he undergoes a medical today.

QPR and near neighbours Liverpool were also thought to be interested in Eto’o,

who could complete the move in time for Saturday’s Premier League clash with former side Chelsea at Goodison Park.

He scored 12 goals in 35 games for the Blues last season, but the four-time African Footballer of the Year fell out with manager Jose Mourinho and was released in July.

The introduction of Eto’o will give Roberto Martinez a much needed attacking option as he is still waiting for Arouna Kone to recover from a knee injury.  

He joins Romelu Lukaku, another former Chelsea man who completed a £28m move from Stamford Bridge last month,

while the west London side have also loaned Christian Atsu to Everton.

Everton Football Club has completed the signing of Cameroon international and three times Champions League winner Samuel Eto'o.

The experienced striker has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Goodison Park following last season's spell at Chelsea.

With 118 caps and a record 56 goals for Cameroon, Eto'o has been prolific throughout his professional career which has included trophy-laden spells at Barcelona and Inter Milan.

Speaking to evertontv, a delighted Martinez said:  "I met him and we had a very good chat about football in general and I was impressed about the hunger he still has.

"For someone who has achieved nearly everything,

he still has the desire he had at 15 when he went to Spain and showed what he could do. For many reasons he has got a point to prove. 



"We are very excited and I think Everton is the perfect home for him.

The fans will make him ready and feel sharp but we have got to be a bit patient with the fitness levels and make sure he is back to his best."

Crowned African Player of the Year a record four times,

Eto'o successfully completed a medical at Finch Farm on Tuesday and is in line to make his debut against his latest former side this Saturday.

The 33-year old forward said:  "I am very happy to be here, I am looking forward greatly to putting on the Blue shirt of Everton.

"I have been very impressed by the style of play Everton adopt. I could see straight away that at this club I will have the opportunity to play football.

I had the chance to speak with the manager over the last few days and we agreed that this was what we would do.

"I was impressed with his enthusiasm but also by the knowledge of football that Roberto Martinez carries,

his vision of football and how he reads football. I still think I can learn a great deal from him here."

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright added: "Roberto and Samuel seemed a perfect fit when they met -

add Everton and Evertonians to that equation and I'm pretty sure Samuel will soon realise

he's got the perfect club and perfect team-mates to really enjoy his second Premier League adventure.

"Throughout all of the negotiations, both Samuel and his representatives conducted themselves in an exemplary way

and left Roberto and myself in no doubt that Everton was the only Club he wanted to play for."
