Transfer news: Roma set to sign Arsenal target Kostas Manolas



Arsenal are set to miss out on the signing of Kostas Manolas with the Greece international set to join Roma.

Media reports in Italy claim the 23-year-old centre-back arrived in Rome's Fiumincino airport from Athens on Tuesday morning and will undergo a medical later in the day.

Roma have reportedly agreed with Olympiacos a 13million euros (£10.4million) transfer fee for the highly-rated defender, who still has two years left in his contract with the Greek giants.

Manolas, who played four games at the World Cup for Greece this summer, attracted the attention of top European clubs, including Arsenal, following a solid 2013-14 campaign with Olympiacos.

He made 25 league appearances last season and scored three goals while he also featured in seven Champions League games for the Piraeus-based club.

Manolas undergoes Arsenal medical

Olympiakos centre-back Kostas Manolas is undergoing a medical at Arsenal ahead of a move to the Gunners, Goal understands.

Manolas has attracted interest from Arsene Wenger, who is targeting a central defensive signing before the transfer window closes following the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona.

As reported, the Gunners opened talks with Olympiakos over a move for the defender earlier in August.

Arsenal are understood to have been quoted a transfer fee of ?10 million for the centre-back.

Manolas is also wanted by Juventus, but the north London side appear to have moved ahead of the Italian club in the race to sign the Greece international.

Wenger confirmed earlier this month that Arsenal were in the market for a centre-back despite the ?20m signing of Calum Chambers,

who featured alongside Laurent Koscielny in the absence of Per Mertesacker in the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

"Vermaelen behaved outstandingly last year - I am grateful for him and I wish him very well," Wenger said.

"If I can find another centre-back I will do it."

Arsenal closed in on the signing of Kostas Manolas on Friday after holding fresh talks with his representatives.

The Gunners are working on a deal to sign the defender from Olympiakos after opening negotiations with the Greek club last week.

Manolas' advisers flew into the UK to step up talks about the structure of the deal and to discuss personal terms.

Arsenal have been quoted a fee of ?11m by Olympiakos for Manolas although the Greek club could be willing to accept a lower figure if all of the costs are paid up front.

Goal revealed last week that Arsene Wenger had sanctioned a formal move for the Greece international

after identifying him as a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen, who joined Barcelona a fortnight ago.

The centre-back, 23, played in the Champions League for his club last season and featured for Greece in this summer's World Cup.

Wenger wants to push through a deal for a new centre-back to join rookie Calum Chambers in providing cover for established pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

The Arsenal boss has competition to sign Manolas, who has attracted interest from Manchester United, Juventus and Napoli.
