Winger Johnson signs four-year deal.Martin O’Neill has completed the second signing of a fantastic Friday by securing the services of England international Adam Johnson.
The 25-year-old winger joins from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee and has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
A delighted O’Neill told safc.com: “Adding quality players to the squad has been our main aim this summer and Adam certainly fits that bill.
“He has terrific ability, great delivery and I'm sure he is a player who will excite our fans.
“I couldn't be more delighted to have him at the football club.”
The move marks a return to the north east for Johnson, who hails from Easington in County Durham.
He came through the youth system at Middlesbrough and quickly rose to become a key player on Teesside.
Johnson made 120 appearances for Boro, scoring 13 goals, and also had brief loan spells at Leeds and Watford.
His dynamic appearances on the wing earned rave reviews and Manchester City came calling in February 2010, paying Middlesbrough a reported £7m to take him to the Etihad Stadium.
A senior debut for England followed, against Mexico at Wembley in May 2010.
He made a total of 97 appearances for City, picking up a Barclays Premier League winners’ medal last season.
He also won the FA Cup and Community Shield with the north west club, for whom he netted 15 goals.
Johnson has won a total of 11 senior caps for England, scoring twice.
