QPR have signed Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker on a four-year deal for a fee of £8.5million.

The central defender signed after passing a medical and is expected to fly out to Germany to join up with the rest of the QPR squad for the club's pre-season tour.

The 22-year-old completes his move to Loftus Road just days after fellow centre-back Rio Ferdinand also agreed to join the newly-promoted Barclays Premier League club.

"I'm very excited to be here. It was important for me to be back playing in the Premier League and (QPR manager)

Harry Redknapp has given me the opportunity to be at this fantastic club," Caulker told the club's website.

"Harry was a big factor for me having worked with him at Tottenham. He was very keen for me to join and it was a big plus knowing the manager wants you.

"Being able to play with Rio was also a big draw. He has been a role model of mine for many years, along with Ledley King.

To have the opportunity to play alongside him was something I felt I couldn't miss out on.

"Our first aim this season has to be to get to 40 points to make sure we stay up. That's our first goal."

The R’s are facing their first season back in the Premier League following one season in the Championship which culminated with a dramatic play-off final win over Derby County.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has admitted he is looking to add players who are already proven in England so they are ready to make an immediate impact.

"I want lads that want to have a go - you just have to hope you can get them," he said. "You can take chances with too many foreign players.

“In the main I like players that have played in England and proved they can do it here rather than wait six months to see if they settle in - we haven't got six months.

"We need to stay in the league this year so we know what we are getting with the Caulkers and the Rios. We are looking at another English striker so if I can get British players in the main then I will."

Transfer News: Queens Park Rangers confirm signing of former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand



Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has signed for Queens Park Rangers on a Bosman free transfer, the club have confirmed.

The 35-year-old centre-half, released by Manchester United at the end of last season,

has signed on a one-year deal following a series of talks with the west London club.

Ferdinand spoke with Rangers boss Harry Redknapp earlier this week following his return from TV punditry at the World Cup and completed a medical on Thursday.

He becomes the newly-promoted club’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

“I spoke to Harry and Mr Fernandes at length. They both looked me in the eye and knew that I still have something to offer,” Ferdinand told the club’s official website.

“It’s not about money – I had loads of more lucrative offers available to me, offers from all over the world, some in places with a better climate than here.

“But the draw for me was to play in the Premier League and back here where it all started.

“I still feel I’ve got something to offer and I’m excited about helping this club cement its place in the Premier League."


Ferdinand trained with QPR as a youth before joining West Ham’s academy in 1992 where he broke into the first-team under Redknapp – then manager at Upton Park.

His brother Anton enjoyed a two-year spell at Loftus Road while his cousin Les,

the former England and Tottenham striker, is considered a QPR legend by supporters.

And Ferdinand said: “My dad used bring me here as a young boy and I used to sit in the Loft.

“QPR was the first professional club to ever sign me and there are great memories for me here – for my family.

“Anton had nothing but good things to say and I watched here when I was a boy, with the likes of Ray Wilkins, Clive Wilson, David Bardsley and Alan McDonald.”


Ferdinand was released by Manchester United after a 12-year stint at the club,

winning six league titles and the Champions League among others, while also playing over 400 times for the club.

He brings the experience boss Redknapp has identified as key to Rangers pursuit of Premier League survival this season.

And Redknapp told Sky Sports News: "We were the only club he was looking to join so it wasn’t that tough a deal to do.

"Rio is easy to deal with and his demands weren’t great. He just wants to play football for another year and we couldn’t be happier. He’s a great signing for us.

"Players like Rio don't come along too often. I said when he was a youngster he would be one of the best defenders in Europe and he has been over a number of years.

"For me, he's a class act on and off the field and he'll be a great influence for everyone at QPR."

Rio Ferdinand has agreed a deal to join newly-promoted Queens Park Rangers, according to Sky sources.

Ferdinand is a free agent after being released by Manchester United at the end of last season after 12 years at Old Trafford.

It is believed he had offers from clubs both at home and abroad, but he has elected to work under Harry Redknapp for the second time in his career.

Redknapp was the manager who gave him his debut at West Ham in 1996, and Ferdinand was the world’s most expensive defender when he left to join Leeds in an £18m deal in 2000.

Ferdinand moved to Old Trafford on a five-year deal in another record deal in July 2002

and went on to win six Premier league titles and the 2007 Champions League during his time with United.

He played 81 times for England between 1997 and 2011 and was a member of three World Cup squads.

Rio's brother Anton played for QPR for two seasons, leaving Loftus Road following their relegation to the Championship in 2013.

QPR are set to sign former England captain Rio Ferdinand and have agreed a fee with Cardiff for Steven Caulker.

Ferdinand, 35, is available on a free transfer following his release from Manchester United

and is set to join Harry Redknapp’s side when he returns from media duties in Brazil.

Former Tottenham centre-back Caulker is another target for the newly-promoted Hoops,

but the Cardiff captain is also attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Southampton.

"Rio has agreed to join us and we're hopeful of getting that one over the line when he gets back from the World Cup," Redknapp told Telegraph Sport.

"I can't foresee any problems with it and we'd be delighted if we can get it done soon.

He's been a player at the top of the list since he left Manchester United and he would give the whole place a lift with his quality and experience."

Redknapp hopes Caulker, 22, will also opt to head to Loftus Road.

"We've agreed a fee with Cardiff and it's now up to Steven to decide his next move," he said.

"I know him well from Spurs and he's always been a tremendous prospect. Hopefully that's another one we can get done."

Earlier this week, QPR, who were promoted via the play-off final at Wembley, announced the release of Aaron Hughes,

Stephane Mbia and Andrew Johnson at the end of their contracts, while midfielder Alejandro Faurlin has signed a contract extension.

Goalkeeper Rob Green and striker Bobby Zamora are also in talks over possible new deals.

Transfer news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leaves Steven Caulker to mull over QPR switch



Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists captain Steven Caulker will be left to make his own decision on a move after a fee was agreed with Queens Park Rangers.

Solskjaer confirmed the clubs have reached an agreement and admits it is down to the centre-back as to whether he will leave the Cardiff City Stadium.

Although a deal appears to be close with Harry Redknapp’s QPR, who replaced Cardiff in the Premier League after winning the Championship playoff,

Liverpool and Southampton are also reported to be interested in the 22-year-old.

Caulker joined Cardiff last summer from Tottenham but was unable to keep the club in the Premier League,

although he did impress personally, featuring in every minute of the Bluebirds’ campaign and netting crucial goals.


The one-cap England international now looks set to return to the Premier League and, despite admitting it will be a loss for Cardiff, Solskjaer is keen to see a deal completed quickly.

“The clubs have agreed a fee,” the Cardiff boss told Wales Online. “It’s been accepted and now it is up to Steven to decide.


At the moment QPR is the only one I know about. I have spoken to them.

“It’s up to Steven if he goes. Of course the lure of the Premier League might be too much for us to hope he might stay here.

He has to make that decision.“You want to get the business done as soon as possible.

We’ve shown that ourselves by signing players early on in the summer. It makes it easier then to get a settled squad.”

The 35-year-old centre-back, who has been capped 81 times by England, is a free agent,

but a revised offer has been made and it appears that the experienced defender will now be heading to Loftus Road after all.

He went on to make over 300 appearances for United, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

QPR secured a return to the Premier League when they beat Derby 1-0 in the Championship play-off final and are now looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp says Rio Ferdinand is keen to move to Loftus Road and he hopes to conclude a deal this week.

Ferdinand has been working as a television pundit at the World Cup in Brazil for the past month, and Redknapp plans to resume talks upon his return on Tuesday.

The former Manchester United player, who won six league titles, two League Cups, one Champions League

and a Club World Cup while at Old Trafford, has been looking for a club since the end of last season.
