Daniel Agger: Liverpool defender returns to Danish club Brondby

By Ben Smith
BBC Sport

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has returned to his native Denmark, after signing a two-year deal with Brondby.
The 29-year-old has struggled with injury problems over the past 12 months and Liverpool have allowed him to leave the club for an undisclosed fee.
"Liverpool have been such a big part of my life that leaving is extremely difficult," Agger said.
"The opportunity arose for me to return home and at this stage of my career it felt like the right decision for me."
The Danish club released a statement  saying Agger has taken a "massive pay cut" to rejoin his old side.
Agger has previously resisted attempts to lure him away from Anfield, notably from Manchester City,
but having fallen behind new signing Dejan Lovren in the defensive pecking order, he has decided the time has come to move on.
The Dane joined Liverpool from Brondby in 2006 in a £5.8m deal and made 232 appearances for the Merseyside club.
He scored 14 goals and won the 2012 League Cup with the Reds, but lost in the 2007 Champions League final against AC Milan.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said: "This is a decision Daniel has reached after much soul searching and deliberation.
"On behalf of everyone at Liverpool, I thank Daniel for his service to the club and hope he finishes his career with some happy times in Denmark."
Agger becomes the third defender to leave the club this summer following the departures of Martin Kelly and Jack Robinson.
Liverpool have also sold striker Luis Suarez and goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Premier League: Liverpool defender Daniel Agger considering future

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has admitted he may be forced to consider a move away from Anfield if he is unable to secure more regular action.

The Denmark international was hampered by injury problems last season

and started just 16 Premier League matches as the Reds finished second in the table behind Manchester City.

Brendan Rodgers insisted recently that Agger remains a key part of his plans for the new season,

particularly as the Reds face an increased fixture workload on their return to the UEFA Champions League.

And while the centre-back is determined to prove his worth to Liverpool, he is clearly unhappy at how the most recent campaign transpired.

"It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things," Agger told Danish newspaper BT.

"How things turned out last season is not acceptable for me.

"I am here now and it is up to me to show the coach that I should play."

A return to former club Brondby has been suggested and Agger would not rule out a move back to the side he left in January 2006 to make the switch to the Premier League.

"Many things can happen in football and I do not want to exclude anything," he added.

Agger reportedly asked to leave Liverpool, Barca considered favourites
by Sheena Sidhu | Posted on Thursday, August 7th, 2014
Liverpool centre-back, Daniel Agger has reportedly decided to leave Liverpool, with Barcelona the favourites to land the Dane.

According to the Mirror, 29-year-old centre back Daniel Agger has requested to leave Liverpool.
The defender has been linked with Barcelona on multiple occasions during the transfer window, and this would pave the way towards Agger joining the Catalan side.

The Danish international reportedly asked Brendan Rodgers permission to leave the club
during an emotional conversation in the dressing room while Liverpool were on tour in America.

Among the reasons cited for his will to leave the club was the acceptance that it would be difficult for him to compete for a starting spot in Liverpool,
given that he made just 23 appearances in the Premier League last season.

The vice-captain was apparently granted permission to leave the tour after the exchange.
Barcelona looks to be the likely destination for him, given that they still appear rather short in the centre of defence.

Transfer news: Liverpool report no approaches for Daniel Agger

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says the club have fielded no enquiries for defender Daniel Agger.

The Danish centre-half has been linked with an exit an Anfield for a number of years now, with each passing transfer window bringing a fresh round of speculation.

This summer has been no different, with Barcelona still said to be considering an approach despite wrapping up a deal for Thomas Vermaelen.

Arsenal, having offloaded Vermaelen to the Nou Camp, are said to view Agger as a possible replacement at the Emirates, while their north London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with holding an interest.

Liverpool, though, maintain that there is nothing to report, with Agger still very much a part of their plans as he works his way back to full fitness.

Rodgers said: "I've seen some stories on that but, no, we haven't had any enquiries.

"Dan's still getting some work done on his knee, he's been a bit unfortunate since America. He's still getting treatment but we haven't had anything, no offers."

Rodgers' focus at present is locked on recruitment, rather than sales, with it possible that there will be further arrivals on Merseyside before September 1.

The Reds boss is delighted with the business he has been able to carry out so far, but is also aware of the need to add depth to his ranks as Liverpool prepare to combine domestic and European duties in 2014/15.

He added after an impressive 4-0 pre-season friendly victory over Borussia Dortmund on Sunday: "I have been really pleased with all of the signings because they have all come in as part of our strategy and the types of profile of players that we want.

"One of the pleasing things for me today was that I could make changes in the game and bring players on and still feel that we were strong.

"That hasn’t been the case since I have been here just because of the lack of depth. But today we could make changes and keep that desire and commitment within the team and the quality, very importantly.

"There are maybe one or two more to come, but come the end of August I think we will hopefully have depth in our squad and be ready to challenge."

Daniel Agger unsure of Liverpool future with transfer deadline looming
• Denmark international currently sidelined with knee injury
• Agger admits frustration by events last season

Daniel Agger has said his future at Liverpool remains uncertain with less than a week remaining of the transfer window.

The Anfield vice-captain has not featured for Brendan Rodgers’s team this season due to a knee injury suffered on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States,
although his first-team prospects appear limited due to the £20m summer signing of Dejan Lovren from Southampton.

Agger was frustrated with his playing time under Rodgers before Lovren’s arrival but,
despite being linked with Barcelona, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid this summer, Liverpool have not received a firm offer for the 29-year-old.
“The future is complicated,” the defender told Jyllands-Posten.
“There are a few things that has to be sorted and we have to take it from there. I actually don’t know what will happen. It is a bit up to Liverpool.
“I have had niggling injuries at the wrong times and I have to say that it is difficult to change the team when it is winning.
I am not frustrated by that. I am frustrated the way it happened and the way it was handled.”

Agger was appointed Liverpool vice-captain last summer in the face of interest from Barcelona
but did not appear to have Rodgers’s confidence during the challenge for the Premier League title.
He denies, however, that he made an emotional appeal to the Liverpool manager during the US tour to be allowed to leave Anfield.

The Denmark international added: “There was nothing true in that story whatsoever.
I went home from the US because I had problems with my knee and had had so for some time.
Brendan Rodgers and I talk with honesty to each other but the last thing I will ever do is stand and whine in front of someone.
Especially when it comes to football, because in football there is nothing to whine about.”

Agger looks set to complete shock cut-price move to former club Brondby
Aug 29, 2014 22:30 By James Pearce 2 Comments
Reds are locked in talks with the Danish Superliga outfit over a permanent deal worth around £3million

Liverpool FC vice-captain Daniel Agger looks set to complete a shock cut-price move to his former club Brondby.

The Reds are locked in talks with the Danish Superliga outfit over a permanent deal worth around £3million for the long-serving Anfield defender.

Agger's future has been the subject of intense speculation all summer after he fell out of favour last season.

The £20million signing of Dejan Lovren last month knocked him further down the pecking order and the frustrated 29-year-old signalled his intention to move on.

He has been linked with Atletico Madrid and Napoli but Agger informed Liverpool he had no interest in playing for anyone else other than Brondby in his homeland.

The transfer has been complicated by the fact that Brondby aren't in a position to pay anywhere near the market value for Denmark's captain.

Liverpool rejected an offer of £20million from Manchester City for Agger in 2012 and £15million from Barcelona 12 months ago.

They could have expected around £10million for him this summer but instead they will have to accept a significantly lower fee.

The Reds are also close to a settlement with Agger over the final two years of his £120,000 per week contract.

Agger has made 232 appearances for Liverpool since his £5.8milliom move from Brondby in January 2006.

He helped Rafa Benitez's side reach the Champions League final in 2007 but the classy centre-back's progress at Anfield was frequently dogged by injuries.

Last season he endured problems with both fitness and form with Brendan Rodgers preferring the defensive combination of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.

If the move to Brondby goes through he will be guaranteed a hero's reception in Copenhagen.

Agger initially joined the club at the age of 12 and helped them clinch the Danish Superliga title in 2005 prior to his move to Anfield.

Part of the deal was a friendly between the clubs and that belatedly happened last month when Agger captained the Reds.

The home fans chanted his name repeatedly and pleaded with him to re-sign for them.

Now it appears they will get their wish with Brondby chairman Jan Bech Andersen willing to help bankroll the deal.
