Transfer news: Thomas Vermaelen leaving Arsenal for Barcelona

Thomas Vermaelen will move to Barcelona after the Liga side agreed terms over his transfer from Arsenal.

The fee the Spanish giants will pay for the Belgian international has not been disclosed

but Vermaelen has already passed a medical and agreed terms over a five-year contract.

Vermaelen moved to Arsenal from Ajax in 2009 and has made a total of 150 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side, scoring 15 goals in the process.  

The 28-year-old captained both clubs on a number of occasions and has also skippered Belgium, for whom he has made 47 appearances.

Vermaelen started 33 Premier League games for Arsenal in his first season

but was restricted to just seven league appearances last term with Wenger preferring the centre-back pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

Barcelona have been looking to bolster their defensive options after Carles Puyol retired earlier this summer

and beat off competition from Manchester United for Vermaelen's signature.

United claimed to have ended their interest in the defender on Friday after rejecting Arsenal’s demands for a player – thought to be Chris Smalling - as part of any deal for Vermaelen.

Thomas Vermaelen: Arsene Wenger says captain may leave



Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has suggested club captain Thomas Vermaelen may leave the Gunners.
The 28-year-old, part of the Belgium squad at the 2014 Fifa World Cup, has been linked with Manchester United.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Wenger said defender Vermaelen is injured but admitted: "It is a possibility that he goes."
Vermaelen, who joined Arsenal from Ajax in June 2009, made 14 Premier League appearances last season.
Wenger said should Vermaelen leave, the club will find a replacement because the Belgian is "an important player in our squad".

Arsenal have agreed a fee of about £15m with Barcelona for the sale of captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The 28-year-old Belgium centre-back must now agree personal terms with the Catalan giants and pass a medical.
Vermaelen was a target for Manchester United but they ended their interest after refusing Arsenal's demand to receive a player as part of the deal.
The move to Barcelona is likely to be completed this weekend, ending Vermaelen's five-year stay in London.
Vermaelen joined Arsenal from Ajax for £10m in 2009 and has made 150 appearances in all competitions.
But he was troubled by a series of injuries and lost his place at centre-back last season
as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger favoured Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as his first-choice pairing.
Vermaelen's form and fitness meant he made just 21 appearances in all competitions last term and Wenger admitted this week that the player needed to move on.
"He could leave, it could happen. I've said that since the start of pre-season," said Wenger.
"He needs to play now. He has shown an outstanding attitude but he is in a position where we wouldn't stand in his way if he finds an interesting opportunity."

Premier League: Manchester United end pursuit of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen



Manchester United have ended their pursuit of Thomas Vermaelen after refusing to consider a player-swap deal with Arsenal, according to Sky sources.

Vermaelen, who is also reported to be wanted by Barcelona,

had been linked with a move to Old Trafford but it is understood Arsenal were not prepared to sanction a direct sale to United.

New United boss Louis van Gaal wanted to bring in the Belgian defender to add experience to his squad

following the summer departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemandja Vidic and Patrice Evra.

Earlier this week Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger gave a strong hint that Vermaelen would be leaving and that United was a possible destination.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield with Manchester City at Wembley,

Wenger admitted there had been interest in his captain but refused to reveal who had been in touch, although he did confirm United “could be in the group”.

"Have we received bids? Yes. I can't tell you who from but you will know very soon," he said.

"Are Man United one of the teams to have made an offer? I think they could be in the group."

Vermaelen has been at Arsenal since 2009 and remains their official club captain,

but he was not a regular started last season as Wenger preferred to partner Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker together in central defence.

Vermaelen facing straight Barcelona or Manchester United choice



Barcelona and Manchester United are locked in a two-way battle for Thomas Vermaelen with the Liga side having now lodged a bid for the Arsenal defender, Goal understands.

Louis van Gaal's United have been knocked back with previous enquiries over an ?8 million offer

but are continuing to push hard to secure a deal as they attempt to bolster their defence following the departures of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra.

Vermaelen has refused to sign a new deal at Arsenal and has told the club he will not agree fresh terms.


The 28-year-old will leave the Gunners on a free transfer next summer, when his current contract with the north London club expires, if they force him to stay for the 2014-15 campaign.

Arsenal would be loathe to lose the Belgium international for nothing and so are ready to sell

but understandably would rather the player moved to Catalunya rather than follow former team-mate Robin van Persie to Old Trafford.

Barcelona have rekindled their interest in Vermaelen

but United boss Van Gaal has made it clear to club officials since day one that he wants Arsenal's club captain to bolster his defence.

Vermaelen now has a straight decision between two of the biggest clubs in the world

and it is expected that he will make his choice and inform his potential new employers later this week.

United remain confident they will land Vermaelen but Barcelona, who themselves will be determined to improve in 2014-15 after a trophyless season last time out,

believe they can persuade the former Ajax man to switch to La Liga.

Barca have already spent ?20m on Jeremy Mathieu in a bid to bolster a lightweight defence already damaged by the retirement of Carles Puyol,

and Vermaelen would represent a useful further addition as head coach Luis Enrique plots a switch to a 3-2-3-2 formation.
