Tottenham close in on Toby Alderweireld transfer



Toby Alderweireld is hoping to complete a move to Tottenham Hotspur after returning from his honeymoon in Bali.
Tottenham are understood to be edging closer to agreeing a fee for Alderweireld with Atletico Madrid, who had tried to send the central defender to Chelsea as part of a bid to re-sign Filipe Luis.
With Chelsea lukewarm on the idea of taking Alderweireld, Spurs have stepped up negotiations to make the Belgian their third signing of the summer.
Alderweireld is keen to partner his former Ajax team-mate and Belgium international colleague Jan Vertonghen in the centre of Tottenham’s defence next season.
The 26-year-old is currently in Bali celebrating his honeymoon after getting married last Friday and expects his future to be sorted out swiftly after his return.
Southampton, where Alderweireld spent last season on loan, remain interested in signing the defender permanently but Spurs are now strong favourites to complete a deal.
The anticipated signing of Alderweireld should complete head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s surgery to his Tottenham defence, following the arrivals of centre back Kevin Wimmer and right-back Kieran Trippier.
Tottenham finished last season in fifth place in the Premier League table, six points behind Manchester United, despite conceding more goals than any club in the top 13 positions.
The 53 goals Spurs conceded were two more than relegated Hull City and the same as Burnley, who also went down.
Other than tightening up his defence, Pochettino wants a new central midfielder and at least one more forward before the new season starts on August 8.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has touched down in Spain to strike a deal for Toby Alderweireld.
Levy will hold key talks with Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil this weekend in an attempt to secure a move for the Belgium international.
The White Hart Lane supremo wants a deal wrapped by Sunday night.
Southampton are also very interested in the versatile defender, something Levy is wary of.
Tottenham now believe they are in pole position to land Alderweireld this summer, particularly if Levy can come to an agreement this weekend.
Southampton have a £6.8million option to buy the 26-year-old, but Atletico can cancel that clause for £1.5m and then sell to the highest bidder.
The Spanish club want at least £10m for Alderweireld, despite the fact he's been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Diego Simeone.

Now to another twist in the future of Toby Alderweireld, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham.

It's our understanding that Southampton believe they have a contract with Atletico Madrid for the defender and expect a permanent transfer to take place, after he spent last season on loan at St Mary's.

Sky Sources have told us that if the Spanish club do a deal with Tottenham or anyone else, then Southampton will consider legal action against Atletico.

Toby Alderweireld is on the verge of signing for Tottenham Hotspur despite a dispute between Southampton and Atletico Madrid over the player, according to Sky sources.

It is understood the Belgium defender, 26, has completed a medical and agreed personal terms at Spurs after their chairman Daniel Levy spent the weekend in Madrid agreeing a deal to bring him to White Hart Lane.

The north London club are pressing ahead with the move despite Southampton, where Alderweireld spent last season on loan, considering legal action against Atletico for doing a deal with another club.

Saints had a £6.8m agreement in place to make his loan permanent, which Atletico had to pay £1.5m to buy themselves and the player out of, and it is understood the Spanish club did not do so within a time-frame previously agreed between the two clubs.

Sky Sports reported last week that Spurs had made Alderweireld one of their top targets this summer and were determined to make him a Tottenham player as Mauricio Pochettino bolsters last season's leaky defence.

Alderweireld played 26 times as Southampton conceded 20 fewer goals in the Premier League than Spurs last season, having failed to establish himself in Atletico's first team.

He moved to Madrid from Ajax, where he also played with Jan Vertonghen and Tottenham forward Christian Eriksen, in 2013, but only started 10 times as Atletico won La Liga in 2013/14.

Born in Antwerp, Alderweireld was an Ajax academy graduate who played over 100 games for the club and won the Eredivisie three times between 2011 to 2013. He has 47 caps for Belgium.
