Jack Wilshere is facing ANOTHER lengthy lay-off after scans suggested his latest injury is much worse than expected.
Wilshere has a suspected hairline fracture in his left fibula (the smaller of the two bones that make up the lower leg), which would be yet another shattering blow for the Arsenal and England midfielder. Injury-jinxed Wilshere has undergone a series of scans and is still hoping that he will not need surgery, which would keep him out for three months. The 23-year-old has his fingers crossed the knock will not turn out to be as serious as recent setbacks, but it is still likely to keep him out for a minimum of six to eight weeks.
It is understood he will get a final verdict before the weekend on whether he will need to go under the knife.
Arsenal originally hoped the lay-off would be short term but it quickly became apparent that the injury will keep him out well beyond England’s next two Euro 2016 qualifiers, with San Marino and Switzerland, at the start of September.
Wilshere’s career has been hit by a long series of injuries which have stunted his progress.
He missed more than three months of 2014-15, and more than a year from June 2011 to October 2012.
The latest injury happened on Saturday, during training for the Community Shield win over Chelsea the next day.
This setback is a hammer blow for Wilshere and a major disappointment for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger as the Gunners look to mount a serious title challenge this season.
Wilshere was desperate for an injury-free season after finishing the last campaign strongly for both his club and his country.
