Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama is a transfer target for Tottenham, according to Sky sources.

The Kenyan moved to St Mary's from Scottish Premiership title holders Celtic two years ago for a fee of £12m.

Ronald Koeman has already lost Morgan Schneiderlin to Manchester United this summer, with Sadio Mane also on the wanted list at Old Trafford.

It is understood 24-year-old Wanyama, who has scored three goals in 66 appearances for Southampton, is keen on working with former Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino again.

Tottenham have sold midfielders Benjamin Stambouli, Etienne Capoue and Paulinho this summer to Paris Saint-Germain, Watford and Guangzhou Evergrande respectively.

Lewis Holtby also completed a move to German side Hamburg after he spent time there on loan last season and that has left the club short of central options.

Defender Eric Dier joined Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb in midfield against Stoke at the weekend but failed to stop the visitors from coming back to draw 2-2 after they were 2-0 down.

Wanyama, who started his career with Belgian side Beerschot AC, has two years left on his current contract.

Tottenham target Victory Wanyama is 'not for sale' insists Southampton boss Ronald Koeman

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman insists Tottenham target Victor Wanyama is 'not for sale' and he has launched a staunch defence of his club's position in the transfer market.

Sky sources understand Spurs are interested in midfielder Wanyama, 24, and that the player is keen to work again with their head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who previously managed him at Saints.

But it is also understood that relations between the clubs are difficult after Tottenham signed Toby Alderweireld, whom Southampton believed they already had a deal to sign from Atletico Madrid following his loan spell last term.

According to Sky sources, Manchester United approached Southampton about Sadio Mane last week and were flatly told he was not available, and Koeman has suggested Spurs would face they same fierce resistance over Wanyama.

"Listen, there is no bid for any player. Not for Wanyama, not for Sadio, not anyone," Koeman said.

"We have to deal with rumours of the press and maybe somebody of Manchester [United] - I don't know.

"There is no contact and no bid for nobody and we don't sell any more players. That is very clear in my opinion. I don't like [these rumours] because maybe players are thinking and they are not then focused on what they have to do.

"The timing is always bad. Maybe it's worse one day before we play at home but it's always bad. We keep going. It is not September 1 yet. There are still 10 or 11 days to go, so we will see what happens."

Koeman has seen star midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin leave for Manchester United this summer, and Saints have been on the receiving end of newspaper speculatoin over captain Jose Fonte.

And he said: "It is the worst situation for the smaller clubs because nobody talks about the best players of Mancheser City, United or Chelsea, because they are in the best place to be.

"But teams like Southampton – they have to deal with this and that is not easy. It makes rumours and everyone is talking about it. We have to play and that is difficult.

"If they don't change the window from September 1, we will always have these rumours."

Victor Wanyama asks to leave Southampton, say Sky sources

Victor Wanyama has told Southampton he wants to leave the Premier League club, according to Sky sources.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said on Friday the player is "not for sale"  while Sky understands the club have informed the 24-year-old of their intention to offer a new contract.

But the former Celtic player has responded by telling the club that he has not been entirely happy at St Mary's for some time and that he sees his future elsewhere.

It is understood that Tottenham want to sign Wanyama before next month's transfer deadline, and that the player is open to a reunion with Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino brought Wanyama to Southampton two years ago for what was believed to be a club-record fee of around £12m.

Wanyama has since made 57 Premier League appearances for Southampton, scoring three goals.

Ronald Koeman has been speaking about Victor Wanyama's future after Southampton's 0-0 draw with Watford.

Sky sources understand Wanyama has told Saints he wants to leave the Premier League club.

However, Koeman insists the midfielder's future is at Southampton.

He said: "All I can say is that for Victor, the future is in Southampton. And for every player hat we like to stay, they have to stay. And it is all about contracts and you have to respect contracts and nobody is for sale.

"And I spoke about that I think two or three days ago, and it still has the same meaning."
