Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck will be out for "a period of months" after undergoing knee surgery, it has been confirmed.

The England forward's left knee was operated on after it was established that he could not step up his rehabilitation work.

Welbeck has been working throughout the summer to recover from the injury sustained at the end of April.

A statement on Arsenal's official website said: "It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field.

"Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well."

英格蘭國家隊領隊鶴臣證實，阿仙奴前鋒韋碧克因傷將缺陣六個月。

兵工廠上星期表示韋碧克接受左膝手術後要休養數個月，三獅兵團主帥鶴臣坦言目前的情況令他擔憂。他說：「韋碧克自從3月已經未有代表英格蘭，阿仙奴則是今年4月開始，所以至今已經超過四個月了。如今更聽說他要缺陣半年，我只希望他能儘快復操。史杜列治的情況也是近似，他已經有超過一年未有代表國家隊披甲了。當然他倆不會就此被遺忘，但我們不能總是只在談論那些無法上陣的球員吧。」
