Newcastle are poised to accept an £8million offer from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua for midfielder Cheick Tiote as they continue their pursuit of Swansea City's Jonjo Shelvey.
The Ivory Coast international is one of the longest serving Newcastle players in the current squad, but the seemingly imminent arrival of Shelvey could see his first-team role diminish.
Tiote, signed from Twente in 2010, has since made over 120 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, but has struggled for form and fitness over the past 18 months.
Shelvey, out of favour at the Liberty Stadium, is expected to seal a £10m switch to Tyneside later this week.
The 23-year-old was involved in a heated exchange with some fans following the Swans' FA Cup third-round defeat by Oxford on Sunday.

Talks between Newcastle's Cheick Tiote and Shanghai Shenhua have stalled.

The Ivorian travelled to China on Friday after the two clubs agreed a fee of around £5m.

However, personal terms have proved a stumbling block and it remains to be seen whether the deal on offer will be agreed by the midfielder.
