Burton Albion 0-5 Liverpool: Daniel Sturridge scores twice as Reds advance

By PA Sport and Patrick Surlis
Last Updated: 24/08/16 12:14am

Liverpool thrashed Burton Albion 5-0 at the Pirelli Stadium to move into the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

The impressive Sadio Mane teed up Divock Origi for the Reds' opener on 15 minutes and Roberto Firmino nodded home their second (22).

A Tom Naylor own goal (61) and a late double by substitute Daniel Sturridge (78, 83) completed the scoring for Jurgen Klopp's side, booking their place in the next round.

The only concern for the Liverpool boss will be a potential injury suffered by Emre Can, who was replaced midway through the second half after going down without contact.

Klopp took Liverpool to the final last season, losing to Manchester City on penalties, after succeeding Brendan Rodgers two months into the campaign and his team are on the Wembley trail again after negotiating a potentially tricky opening tie against Sky Bet Championship opposition.

Burton were on the back foot from the off as Origi latched on to Mane's through ball down the right side of the penalty area but shot straight at goalkeeper Stephen Bywater.

Mane was involved again shortly afterwards, starting a move which saw Adam Lallana's cross find Firmino but Bywater pushed his powerful header wide.

Bywater was busy again when he rushed out to block at the feet of Origi but he was beaten after 15 minutes and Mane was again the architect, showing good feet inside the box to create space to cross for Origi who turned the ball in from close range with a back-heel flick.

Lallana sent a header wide as the Premier League team continued to create openings before Bywater's good early work was undone after his mistake led to Liverpool's second goal. The goalkeeper's throw out was intercepted and Nathaniel Clyne surged down the right wing before crossing for Firmino to head home.

To their credit Burton played some good football at times but struggled to create any chances. Defender Kyle McFadzean sent a header wide just before half-time from a set-piece.

It took Liverpool until the 61st minute to extend their lead. Can flicked on James Milner's corner and the ball hit Naylor on the hip and went in.

There was a rare chance for Burton immediately afterwards but Lucas Akins shot wide from inside the box after latching onto a long pass.

Sturridge found his range with a 22-yard effort that Bywater had to tip wide before tapping in from close range after 78 minutes following good play down the right from Milner and Mane.

Five minutes later, and following Mane's third assist of the night, Sturridge powered a shot into the bottom corner of the net from 18 yards to complete the scoring.

Chelsea 3-2 Bristol Rovers: Michy Batshuayi at double as Blues survive scare
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 23/08/16 10:25pm

Chelsea  3 M Batshuayi (29, 41),V Moses (31)

Bristol Rovers 2 P Hartley (35),E Harrison (48 pen)

Michy Batshuayi scored twice but Chelsea had to survive a tense second half to reach third round of the EFL Cup with a 3-2 victory over Bristol Rovers at Stamford Bridge.

A strong Blues line-up numbering five first-team regulars including Pedro and Nemanja Matic laboured against their League One opponents despite twice claiming two-goal leads as Batshuayi - on his first start - scored either side of Victor Moses' goal.

Peter Hartley and Ellis Harrison, who fired the only goal of the second half, gave Rovers hope of a famous upset against the Premier League giants and on more than one occasion they threatened an equaliser.

But Eden Hazard and Oscar came on to reinforce Antonio Conte's side and the visitors eventually ran out of steam having given everything in pursuit of a prized scalp.

Batshuayi celebrated his full debut after impressive cameos against West Ham and Watford with a brace, although the £33m summer signing from Marseille was also wasteful.

Antonio Conte opted against promoting Diego Costa from a heavyweight bench and the Brazilian-born marksman seems certain to be restored to the starting XI at Batshuayi's expense for Saturday's Premier League clash with Burnley.

It was the Belgium striker who forced an early save from keeper Steve Mildenhall at the near post and during a scramble from the ensuing corner, captain Branislav Ivanovic almost bundled the ball home.

The Belgian should have propelled Chelsea ahead in the 19th minute after smart passes from Cesc Fabregas - who was making his first start of the season - and Ruben Loftus-Cheek sent him goalbound.

Having looked up to pick his spot, Batshuayi then scuffed a tame shot across the face of goal.

Loftus-Cheek struck the left post after marauding through Rovers' defence and the 20-year-old was involved when Chelsea stormed ahead just before the half-hour mark, finding Matic, who pulled back for Batshuayi to drive home.

In a heartbeat the lead became 2-0 after Pedro - who also played a key role in the build up to the opener - crossed to Cesar Azpilicueta and when he stabbed the ball back to Moses who was well-positioned to finish.

Chelsea's defence responded to the commanding position by losing focus, enabling Hartley to nod in Chris Lines' free-kick before Harrison headed a great chance wide moments later.

Any panic was swiftly quelled, however, when Fabregas picked out the dangerous Loftus-Cheek who rounded his marker and teed up a powerful finish for Batshuayi.

An entertaining match continued its unpredictable path into the second half when Matty Taylor raced in on goal only to be brought down by Pedro, who was shown a yellow card.

Referee Keith Stroud also pointed to the spot and Harrison made no mistake, while long range attempts from Harrison and Jermaine Easter cranked up the pressure on Chelsea.

On came John Terry for injured debutant Ola Aina, joining Hazard among the reinforcements summoned from the bench by Conte.

Rovers were tiring and Chelsea were now back in control, knowing they had weathered the storm.

Peterborough 1-3 Swansea: Oliver McBurnie hits brace in EFL Cup tie
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 23/08/16 10:28pm

Peterborough Unite 1L Da Silva Lopes (75)

Swansea 3 J Fulton (15),O McBurnie (41, 44)

Former winners Swansea made a grand EFL Cup entrance as they breezed to a 3-1 success at Peterborough.

A slick Swans side, featuring four men who starred at Wembley when they lifted the trophy in 2013, sailed through a second-round test courtesy of a first-half super show at the ABAX Stadium.

Two fringe players came to the fore as boss Francesco Guidolin rang the changes.

Rookie striker Oliver McBurnie enjoyed a dream debut when hitting a deadly double-blow just before the break after having a prominent role in an early opener from Jay Fulton - also his first senior goal for the club.

Speedster Jefferson Montero carved out the breakthrough after 15 minutes. His cross from the left picked out McBurnie, who reacted quickly to nod the ball into the path of Fulton to head home, after seeing his initial effort saved.

Nathan Dyer squandered glorious one-on-one opportunities to increase the advantage either side of the half-hour. His first effort was kept out by late Posh goalkeeping call-up Mark Tyler, who was promoted from the bench after Ben Alnwick picked up an injury in the warm-up, before he dragged another golden chance wide.

Tyler continued to keep Swansea at bay when finger-tipping a Montero shot onto the far post, but it only provided brief respite as the visitors effectively sealed victory with McBurnie's quick salvo.

The 20-year-old guided a second goal into the far corner from 15 yards on 41 minutes before pouncing again three minutes later to roll the ball into a gaping net after fellow debutant Mike Van Der Hoorn's shot had been saved.

Swansea took their feet off the pedal in the second period, but did still pose an attacking threat with McBurnie being denied a hat-trick by Tyler before Dyer steered another effort just wide.

League One hosts Posh were much improved after the break and Swansea goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt had to produce a smart double-save to keep them at bay.

The Sweden international kept out Marcus Maddison's 25-yard drive before also blocking Tom Nichols' follow-up.

But there was nothing Nordfeldt could do to prevent 17-year-old substitute Leo Da Silva Lopes slamming in a terrific, long-range consolation for Posh courtesy of his first senior goal with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

That denied a Swansea defence featuring Neil Taylor, in his first action since helping Wales reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016, a clean sheet, and they had to survive another scare when Nichols struck a post late on.

But it was still a relatively smooth passage for the Welsh side.

Exeter 1-3 Hull: Adama Diomande on target as Tigers head through in EFL Cup
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 23/08/16 10:36pm

Exeter City 1 J Taylor (24)
Hull 3 A Diomande (26, 77),R Snodgrass (81)

Hull continued their fine start to the season, but only after they were given a scare by League Two Exeter in a 3-1 win.

Jake Taylor gave Exeter the lead with a stunning long-range strike, but joint Premier League leaders Hull hit back to win 3-1 with two goals from Adama Diomande and a Robert Snodgrass strike.

After a relatively even first 15 minutes, Hull came within a whisker of taking the lead when the dangerous Diomande cut in from the left wing and curled a shot against the face of the crossbar.

Exeter's Liam McAlinden then rounded Dusan Kuciak, but the Tigers' goalkeeper did well to recover and make the save.

Exeter went in front after 24 minutes when Taylor collected the ball 30 yards out and unleashed a stunning strike that flew into the top corner.

The lead did not last long, though, as Hull equalised almost immediately. Shaun Maloney crossed from the right and Diomande headed in from close range.

Ryan Harley shot wastefully wide after great work by McAlinden as Exeter threatened once more, while Diomande was off target before Christy Pym made a fine stop to deny Greg Luer as Hull ended the first half in the ascendency.

Exeter started the second half well with Harley and Joel Grant off target from distance, while the impressive Lloyd James blasted a free-kick just wide.

Hull did not threaten until the 65th minute when Diomande was again off target from Andrew Robertson's cross and then Tom Huddlestone struck the upright with a deflected shot.

However, Hull went in front in the 78th minute when Diomande rifled in from 10 yards after linking well with Greg Olley.

It was harsh on Exeter, who had been enjoying their best spell of the game, and the contest was effectively ended after 82 minutes when substitute Snodgrass curled in a free-kick from 25 yards after a foul by Jordan Tillson.

Exeter battled on with Grant trying his luck from distance but Kuciak was equal to it, while Snodgrass came close to adding a fourth in time added on.

For Hull boss Mike Phelan, it was a third straight win and the travelling fans again sung their support for the Tigers' interim manager.

As for Exeter, it was a gallant showing from a youthful side which again included 15-year-old sensation Ethan Ampadu, who was named the sponsors' man of the match.

Everton 4-0 Yeovil: Ronald Koeman's side cruise into third round
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 23/08/16 11:32pm

Everton 4 A Lennon (28),R Barkley (69),A Kone (83, 90+1)

Aaron Lennon's first goal since March, captain for the night Ross Barkley's second of the season and two late strikes from Arouna Kone gave Everton a comfortable 4-0 EFL Cup win at home to Yeovil.

It was expected to be fairly straightforward against a side 79 places further down the leagues, but manager Ronald Koeman signalled his intent by handing full debuts to new signings Ashley Williams and Yannick Bolasie.

However, striker Romelu Lukaku's first start of the campaign showed he still has some way to go to reach the sharpness which brought 25 goals last term.

And he was outdone by substitute Kone, who scored his first goals since January, taking his tally to 11 in 56 matches over three years.

Lukaku curled a shot wide after just 90 seconds, had a half-volley cleared off the line by Alex Lawless, fired wastefully wide at the near-post and poked wide in the first half, and did not get any closer after the break.

Bolasie proved a handful on both flanks and had a penalty shout turned down after Bevis Mugabi's tackle, but the only move of real quality, in the 28th minute, left the League Two visitors chasing shadows.

A quick interchange of passes between James McCarthy, Barkley and Lukaku cut through Yeovil and McCarthy's pull-back from the byline was side-footed into an unguarded net by Lennon.

It was the only really incisive move of the night as Everton were busy without being particularly penetrative until superior fitness began to tell in the final quarter.

Krysiak's flap at a Barkley corner almost led to him conceding another while Mason Holgate flashed a header over just before the break with Matt Butcher's left-footed strike just over representing Yeovil's solitary effort of the half.

Lukaku's frustrations continued when a bouncing back-pass over the head of Nathan Smith presented the Belgian with a shooting opportunity a minute into the second half and he planted his shot wide.

Pressure continued to grow as Bryan Oviedo fired into the side-netting, Lukaku could only stab a bouncing free-kick wide of the far post, where Holgate could not get his head on it, and McCarthy shot over.

It was one-way traffic but it was not until the cushion of a second goal was given to them by Barkley's low, curling 69th-minute free-kick that home fans could breathe easy and Kone, from the edge of the area and close range, gave the scoreline added gloss.

Crystal Palace 2-0 Blackpool: Christian Benteke makes debut in EFL Cup win at Selhurst Park
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 23/08/16 11:29pm

Crystal Palace 2 S Dann (25),C Wickham (47)

Christian Benteke made his Crystal Palace debut in the 2-0 win over Blackpool in the EFL Cup second round at Selhurst Park, on Tuesday.

A much-changed team responded to 1-0 Premier League defeats at home to West Brom and away to Tottenham by easing into the competition's third round.

The attacking potential that has been missing for much of 2016 showed signs of returning, with Connor Wickham and Scott Dann getting on the scoresheet.

Alan Pardew made seven changes to the team that lost at Spurs on Saturday, but it retained a strong look.

Only  Dann, Pape Souare, Andros Townsend and Jason Puncheon kept their places, but there was little question Pardew was aware of the need to win after two defeats.

In addition to £27m club-record signing Benteke, France international goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was given his debut. There was also a first start for the £10m James Tomkins in central defence and places in midfield for Yohan Cabaye and James McArthur.

Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer also oversaw four changes, suggesting that like Pardew his priority remains the league.

In the build-up to recruiting Benteke, Pardew had spoken of his belief the 25-year-old striker could again thrive amid the crosses he expects Palace's wingers to deliver.

Puncheon's early right-wing cross towards him therefore came as little surprise, but he struggled to maintain his balance and connect with the ball.

He followed that by shooting wide of the left post when the ball fell awkwardly to him on his weaker left foot, but showed greater promise when teeing himself up for a later effort that went wide of the right.

Palace's opening goal came in the 26th minute, at a point when Blackpool appeared under little more than a routine threat.

The lively Townsend crossed towards Dann, and when the captain shot towards goal he watched his effort unconvincingly deflect off Blackpool's Clark Robertson and beyond goalkeeper Sam Slocombe's reach.

Wickham replaced Benteke at half-time, when it appeared it was decided the latter requires easing back into regular first-team football.

If he feels threatened by the Belgian's arrival it almost instantly showed. He is yet to justify Pardew's faith in him, but was presented with a fine chance from Puncheon's 47th-minute cross from which he powerfully shot first time from close range high into the net.

Like their visitors, Palace thereafter demonstrated little desire to pursue a third goal and only came close when Townsend's optimistic shot from midfield struck the bar.

It regardless felt an important victory, one needed to restore both belief and the match fitness of several influential figures who had been missing.

Stevenage 0-4 Stoke City: Peter Crouch hits hat-trick for Potters
By PA Sport
Last Updated: 23/08/16 11:30pm

Stoke City 4 P Crouch (14, 48, 70),P Bardsley (32)

Peter Crouch scored a hat-trick as Stoke advanced to the third round of the EFL Cup by sweeping aside League Two Stevenage 4-0 at the Lamex Stadium.

The former England striker notched either side of Phil Bardsley's brilliant 30-yard strike, before adding his third with 20 minutes left to seal a comprehensive victory for the Premier League outfit.

Mark Hughes made five changes to his Stoke side from their 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, with Charlie Adam and Jonathan Walters playing just behind Crouch.

It took just 13 minutes for the 35-year-old to make an impact, nodding home from three yards out after a neat exchange between Marko Arnautovic and Joe Allen had carved open the Stevenage defence.

Crouch came close to a second on 20 minutes, heading narrowly wide from Arnautovic's whipped cross from the left-hand side.

Bardsley's wonder-strike increased Stoke's advantage on 32 minutes, giving goalkeeper Jamie Jones no chance.

Jones reacted smartly to deny Allen just before the break as the Potters continued their first-half dominance.

The 26-year-old Welshman picked up possession from Crouch's knock-down before swiveling into space, but Jones expertly tipped away his goal-bound effort for a corner.

Despite struggling to deal with Stoke's attacking threat, Stevenage began to enjoy spells of possession.

Rowan Liburd weaved into space but could not evade the presence of Ryan Shawcross, who duly blocked his strike towards goal.

Stevenage boss Darren Sarll partnered Liburd with Jake Hyde in attack as the hosts went in search of a route back into the match.

However, Stoke put the tie out of reach just three minutes into the second half as Crouch grabbed his second, converting another Arnautovic cross with an emphatic header.

Walters came close to adding a fourth on 57 minutes. The Republic of Ireland international darted into space but defender Fraser Franks reacted well to deflect the forward's effort away for a corner.

Jones was on hand again to parry away an Adam free-kick, but it was left to Crouch to add a fourth and complete his hat-trick.

The striker showed brilliant chest control before firing beyond Jones with a trademark acrobatic volley from Allen's right-wing cross.

Under-siege Stevenage goalkeeper Jones reacted well to deny Adam again before full-time, tipping away the Scotland international's curling effort as Stoke eased their way into the third round.
