Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe is closing in on a three-year-deal at Bournemouth that will see him earn over £100,000 a week. The 34-year-old has a clause in his current deal which allows him to leave Sunderland on a free transfer after their relegation to the Championship.
And Sportsmail now understands Eddie Howe has convinced Defoe that a move to the south coast would be beneficial for both parties.Defoe held talks with the Cherries on Monday and has agreed to play for the club, assuming he completes a medical in the coming days.The move will see England striker Defoe earn over £6million a year - a wage he will feel he has earned after scoring 15 top flight goals last season.
Before talks began with Bournemouth, Crystal Palace are believed to have shown an interest, but uncertainty in south London put paid to that.
West Ham were another club said to be keen on the veteran centre-forward, but they instead moved their focus to other targets ahead of the summer.
Defoe has previously played at Bournemouth, during a successful loan spell in the early stages of his career.
He scored an impressive 19 league goals, including 12 in 10 consecutive games.
