Liverpool have rejected an £11 million bid from Napoli for left-back Alberto Moreno. The Spanish defender was a rare starter last season, but the Merseyside club has put a £15 million price tag on the 24-year-old and is awaiting bigger offers. There has been plenty of interest in the full-back, with both Milan clubs exploring the possibility of a deal. Moreno’s former club, Sevilla, are also considering signing him back. Atletico Madrid made a loan request last January which Liverpool rejected. Liverpool bought Moreno for £12 million three years ago.Napoli’s move is expected to be the first of numerous bids for the player, which explains why Liverpool are sure they can receive maximum value even though Moreno has been overlooked for James Milner in his position for the last 12 months. Moreno’s future will determine whether Liverpool sign another left back in the coming months. Should he go, Klopp will replace him. If not, Liverpool are prepared to go another season with Moreno as back-up, but given the level of interest and value of Napoli’s opening bid an exit seems most likely.
Klopp was interested in Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy in the event of buying another left-back but it seems he is heading elsewhere – Manchester City have been negotiating a price all summer. Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool medical is taking place today, his arrival for an initial £35 million, which could rise to as much as £39 million based on add-ons, to be confirmed on its conclusion.
He will be the club’s record signing, although not for long. However, Liverpool know they face a challenge to secure their other main targets this summer.
Naby Keita’s club, Red Bull Leipzig, have reiterated their hard-line stance on the player’s future in the wake of Liverpool’s pursuit.
“It would be negligent to sell one of our key players now,” Leipzig’s chief executive OIiver Mintzlaff told the German newspaper Bild.
“Emil (Forsberg) and Naby are extremely talented and developable players, we are glad that we are able to keep up with their development as a club and now we can prove ourselves in the Champions League in the coming season.”
