Manchester United opened their Champions League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

United, who returned to Europe's elite club competition after a one-year absence after winning the Europa League last season, lost Paul Pogba to injury in the first half but his replacement, Marouane Fellaini, made an instant impact, opening the scoring in the 35th minute.

Romelu Lukaku extended the hosts' advantage in the 53rd minute before substitute Marcus Rashford made the points safe on what was a comfortable night for Jose Mourinho's side.

Pogba was handed the captain's armband by Mourinho but his night was cut short in the 19th minute with the Frenchman picking up what looked like a hamstring injury.

Fellaini replaced him and United almost took the lead minutes later when Lukaku drove to the byline before picking out Henrikh Mkhitaryan, whose shot rebounded off the post.

United eventually took the lead in the 35th minute and it was substitute Fellaini who broke the deadlock, heading Ashley Young's inch-perfect cross past goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik from close range to score the 50th goal of his club career in England.

The hosts extended their lead straight after the break and it was another cross that caused the problems at the heart of the Basel defence. Daley Blind picked out Lukaku from the left, and the Belgium international used his strength to get on the end of it, heading the ball past a helpless Vaclik to score for the seventh European appearance in succession .

Minutes later, United almost made it three but this time Vaclik stood tall to palm Lukaku's header to safety before David De Gea pulled of a brilliant stop of his own to deny Mohamed Elyounoussi.

But it was Mourinho's side that extended their lead when Rashford, who replaced Juan Mata, converted Fellaini's cross in the 84th minute to score on his Champions League debut and complete an easy night's work for United, who went top of Group A on goal difference after CSKA Moscow's 2-1 win at Benfica.

Davide Zappacosta scored a wonder goal on his full debut as Chelsea made a resounding return to the Champions League with a 6-0 win against Azerbaijani champions Qarabag at Stamford Bridge.

Zappacosta beat goalkeeper Ibrahim Sehic with a spinning cross-shot from almost on the touchline to put Antonio Conte's team two up following Pedro's fifth-minute 20-yard strike.

Cesar Azpilicueta headed a third early in the second half, before a first Chelsea goal from Tiemoue Bakayoko and a brace from Michy Batshuayi saw Conte's side blitz Qarabag with three strikes in 11 minutes.

The tournament debutants from Azerbaijan rarely looked like troubling Thibaut Courtois in the home goal, with South African centre-forward Dino Ndlovu limited to speculative efforts from distance as the hosts cruised to a comfortable opening-day victory in Group B.

In what was always likely to be Conte's side's most straightforward group-stage assignment, Chelsea were ahead inside five minutes, Willian being given space to meander in-field from a short corner and pick out Pedro who clipped a neat finish inside Sehic's near post.

Qarabag never looked comfortable in their shape on their Champions League bow but it was a moment of individual brilliance from Zappacosta which brought the second goal, firing the ball in from the touchline after a driving run with Sehic expecting a cross.

The visitors stood off Cesc Fabregas from a Willian quick free kick for Chelsea's third, allowing the Spaniard to stand the ball up for Azpilicueta to nod a simple header into the corner as Gurban Gurbanov's side withered under the onslaught.

Former Birmingham City midfielder Michel misjudged a cross with 20 minutes to go, cushioning the ball into the path of Bakayoko to slam in his first Chelsea goal via a deflection, and Qarabag continued to afford Chelsea acres of space when Batshuayi, in the side in place of Alvaro Morata, strolled through to plant a fine drive into Sehic's bottom corner.

Polish full-back Jakub Rzezniczak dwelt on the ball in the corner to allow a grateful Zappacosta to steal possession and deliver a low cross for Batshuayi to grab his second and Chelsea's sixth, as the Belgian made the most of a rare start as Morata watched from the bench.

Ndlovu tried in vain to cut the deficit when he fired over Courtois' cross bar from 18 yards in the closing stages, but Qarabag were out of their depth as Chelsea warmed up for stiffer tests in Group B against Roma and Atletico Madrid.

Lionel Messi scored either side of half-time as Barcelona brushed aside Juventus 3-0 in their opening Champions League Group D clash on Tuesday night.

Messi made the breakthrough in the final minute of the first half, the first time the playmaker had scored against Gianluigi Buffon in his career.

Ivan Rakitic then doubled the Catalans' lead with a composed finish 11 minutes after half-time, before Messi completed the scoring 21 minutes from time with his 515th goal for the club.

Both goalkeepers were called into making impressive early stops, with first Marc-Andre ter Stegen getting fingertips to Mattia De Sciglio's well-struck effort, before Buffon did equally well to palm Luis Suarez's effort over the bar.

However, just as it looked as though the first half would end goalless, Barca struck through that man Messi, who played a neat one-two on the edge of the area with Suarez, before placing a low left-footed effort into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

The home side nearly added to their score when the irrepressible Messi crashed a thunderous effort against the inside of the post seven minutes into the second period.

That close shave was soon forgotten, though, when Barcelona added a second moments later.

Suarez, back from injury, released Messi down the right and with acres of space to himself, the Argentina international cut inside, before seeing his goal-bound effort cleared from off the line by Stefano Sturaro.

The substitute's clearance fell straight at the feet of Rakitic, however, with the midfielder making no mistake with a cool finish.

And the home side then ended the game as a contest after a lightning counter ended with Messi leaving Buffon on his behind and the ball in the back of the net as he scored his 96th Champions League goal to gain revenge for losing to Juve in last season's quarter-finals.
