Southampton are favourites to sign Theo Walcott if the winger leaves Arsenal during the January transfer window.

Sky Sports News understands the position is likely to become clearer in the next week with talks expected between the club and Walcott's representatives, but at present a deal is not imminent.

Arsenal's longest-serving player left Southampton as a 16-year-old in 2006 and he remains a popular figure at St Mary's.

However, Southampton's ability to attract new players is being hampered by their poor recent form in the Premier League.

The Saints may also struggle to match Walcott's £120k a week wages but, if he does decide to leave, he may be willing to take a pay cut to secure more game time and increase his chances of re-entering England manager Gareth Southgate's thinking ahead of this summer's World Cup in Russia.

Walcott is out of contract in 18 months and is unlikely to sign a new deal while he remains on the bench most match days.

Southampton have been linked with Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge and Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon in this window, but these reports are understood to be inaccurate.

Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed Southampton are interested in re-signing Arsenal's Theo Walcott this month.

Southampton progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Fulham as James Ward-Prowse's first-half finish ensured they ended a run of nine games without victory and eased the pressure building on their manager.

Following the £75million sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, Southampton plan to strengthen their attacking options.

They remain uncertain about their hopes of re-signing Walcott, who left in 2006, but the manager said: "I have been talking about him.

"He is a good player, but I don't know with the negotiations, with the market, I imagine that this type of player would have a lot of possibility. For us it's not easy.

"Hopefully we can bring somebody that can help us be stronger. This is our target now. We know the market is difficult, but we are working on that."

Some of the club's supporters chanted for Pellegrino's dismissal, on Tuesday, when they fell to 17th in the Premier League by losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace.

At Fulham when he replaced Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina as they sought to preserve their narrow lead they sang, "You don't know what you're doing", but Pellegrino insists victory has given them a platform to build upon.

Asked about the response from the visiting supporters to his 80th-minute decision to replace Hojbjerg, he said: "When I make a change I think it is best for the team. When the opponent is dominating, you need fresh players.

"I am not upset. I think the fans are with us and the team and were great from beginning until the end and I cannot complain about anything.

"I understand when the fans have their opinions, but when I am doing something I am thinking about my team and my players and not the fans.

"It is an important result for us and we have taken a step forward in this competition, and can hopefully use this game as a base to improve every single week."

Everton are challenging Southampton in the race to land Theo Walcott for £20million.

Arsenal may consider letting the England forward leave this month, with Walcott on the periphery of Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans.

And Everton are confident that they can beat the Saints to Walcott’s signature this month.

Everton would be able to get close to Walcott’s current deal, worth £110,000 per week; while Southampton’s financial limits would mean the 28-year-old would need to take pay cut to rejoin the club where he started his career.

However, if Walcott prefers not to uproot his young family from the south of England, Southampton may well find themselves in pole position to land the player.

Walcott seems certain to leave the Emirates in the summer given his lack of action so far this season.

However, much could depend on whether Alexis Sanchez moves on this month, with Wenger unlikely to sanction exits for both Walcott and the Chilean without having replacements lined up.
