ROMA SIGN SPURS' DEFENDITottenham defender Rodrigo Defendi has joined Roma on loan, hours after the Italian club missed out on left-back Lee Young-Pyo.
The Serie A side swooped for the 20-year-old Brazilian defender after Lee rejected the chance to move to Roma for personal reasons.Defendi's move is for an initial season-long spell although Luciano Spalletti's side have the option to make the move permanent before the end of April for a nominal fee.
The former Cruzeiro man, who arrived at Spurs under the reign of former boss Jacques Santini, failed to become part of Martin Jol's plans at White Hart Lane.
Defendi was loaned to Italian outfit Udinese last season and will relish the move to Roma as he bids to re-establish his career.
Meanwhile, Roma sporting director Daniele Prade has revealed their bid to land Lee collapsed at the last minute when the player opted to stay with the Barclays Premiership side for personal, "religious-based" reasons.
The South Korea international was on the brink of completing a move to Stadio Olimpico, but Prade says despite agreements with Spurs and the player's agent, the transfer fell down at the final hurdle.
The move was so close to completion the club had even organised the time of his medical.
Prade told Roma's official website: "The agreement had been found in all details, either with Tottenham Hotspur or with Lee's agent Mr Kim.
"When everything was defined, also the time of the medicals, unexpectedly the player affirmed not to have the will to accept the transfer, talking about reasons of religious origin.
"At this point, with a big surprise, the club took note of this and respected the player's decision."
