Ronnie Clayton, one of the best-known and most-loved figures in Blackburn Rovers' 135-year history, has died.
The former Rovers and England skipper was 76.
Rovers' chairman John Williams said: "Everyone at Ewood Park is deeply saddened by the news.
"Ronnie was not only a wonderful servant and ambassador for the club, he was also one of the most popular men ever to be associated with Rovers.
"No-one had a bad word for Ronnie and he will be so very sadly missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to his dear wife Val and all his family at this saddest of times."
Preston-born Ronnie enjoyed a wonderful playing association with Rovers over two decades and played 35 times for England, many of them as skipper, including appearances in the World Cup.
An outstanding wing half, he was rated one of the best England players of his generation and, along with Bryan Douglas, will forever be remembered as a true son of Blackburn Rovers. He had no other professional club during a truly glorious 20-year career.
The club will pay its respects before tomorrow's Barclays Premier League game with Chelsea at Ewood.
