HOBBS: I'M A LOT HAPPIER NOW Jack Hobbs says his confidence has been restored following a few days of vastly contrasting fortunes while away with the Liverpool first team squad in Switzerland. After suffering a personal 'nightmare' against Kaiserslautern on Saturday, the highly-rated youngster bounced back in style with a near faultless display in the 2-0 defeat to Grasshoppers in Zurich on Tuesday.
The Youth Cup winning defender showed great strength of character to put his weekend misery behind him and his performance was one of the few bright spots as the Reds suffered their second successive summer loss.
"I'm a lot happier now and a bit relieved to be honest. Saturday was a nightmare. I was very upset afterwards so it was good to get a bit of confidence back," he told Liverpoolfc.tv. Hobbs also revealed how the players and manager helped him through the worst moment yet of his fledgling professional career.
"The manager just gave me a few pointers to what I should have done and was very supportive. It was really good of him and meant a lot to me. It certainly helped lift my spirits," added the 17-year old. "All the players rallied around as well, which was great. Many of them have been through similar experiences. Everyone has been really helpful in getting me back on track.
"I have to look at that performance as part of the huge learning curve. There's no point dwelling on it. You have to show character and bounce back, and I think I've done that against Grasshoppers.
"To be selected again and play the full 90 minutes was a huge boost to my confidence. I was really happy about that and hopefully I can now go on from here." Having impressed for the youth and reserve teams last season, and figuring in all of Liverpool's pre-season games so far this summer, Hobbs is optimistic about the coming campaign and hopeful of making more in-roads into the first team squad.
He continued: "I'm feeling good again and looking forward to the new season. Last season was a fairly good season for me but being handed the chance to show what I can do in the first team this summer has been a marvelous experience.
"It's been a bit tiring but that's what you expect in pre-season. My fitness is good and, as I say, my confidence is back. Just being here in Switzerland has whetted my appetite to be a regular member of the first team squad and that obviously has to be my main aim in the season ahead.
"It would be nice to play a few competitive games and hopefully if we have a good run in the cup competitions then maybe a few chances will come my way."
