An opening bid of about £22m has been rejected by Spurs, and the Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, who will meet Modric's representatives next week, has made clear his objections to the prospect of losing the Croatia international. Should that pursuit continue to be blocked, Chelsea will switch their attentions more concertedly towards Nasri.

ROBIN VAN PERSIE WANTS OUT OF ARSENAL

The Gunners are set to lose wantaway captain Cesc Fabregas, fellow midfielder Samir Nasri and defender Gael Clichy.

And van Persie is ready to rock the Gunners further by handing in a transfer request IF boss Arsene Wenger fails to replace his departing Fabregas’ impending departure to Barcelona would promote van Persie to skipper as the club’s most experienced player, having joined from Feyenoord seven years ago.

In all that time he has just one FA Cup winner’s medal from 2005 to show for his efforts and has told pals in Holland of his growing concern at the Gunners’ failure to win silverware.

He is deeply worried at the prospect of the club’s big players being sold and promising prospects – rather than star names – being signed to fill their places.

Boss Wenger has a history of signing players and turning them into stars.

Typical of his raids into the transfer market is his latest target Gervinho, 24.

The Ivory Coast striker has had no European experience with Le Mans or current French club Lille.

If Wenger does not bring in big names Van Persie is ready to tell the Frenchman he wants out. But he is planning to wait and see who comes in this summer.

Starsport can reveal the Arsenal boss is hoping to make a like-for-like signing if he loses Clichy to Manchester City by landing England left-back Leighton Baines from Everton.

But Andriy Arshavin could also be on his way out with Turkish giants Galatasaray weighing up a £13.5m bid for the Russian.

Meanwhile, Southampton boss Nigel Adkins has denied that wonderkid Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the verge of a move to Arsenal.

The £10m-rated 17-year-old has been strongly linked with the Gunners, but

Adkins said: “There is no bid on the table, and until there is, then there’s nothing to talk about.”

Villa prepare to enter race for Parker with £5m bid after Spurs cool on West Ham ace

Aston Villa are set to launch a £5million bid for West Ham midfielder Scott Parker.

Manager Alex McLeish is making the bold move after Tottenham wavered.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is understood to be reluctant to offer wages of around £70,000-a-week for the 30-year-old.

However, Villa are exploring ways of presenting the Londoner with a suitable package.

West Ham want at least £7m for Parker, after accepting a £10m offer from Turkish club Fenerbahce only for the England midfielder to reject the move, but Villa hope to negotiate.

McLeish is inching closer to a deal for Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given and has also earmarked Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia as a potential replacement for Ashley Young.

Given, 35, has become frustrated at Manchester City after losing his place to Joe Hart and will be allowed to leave Eastlands for a fee in the region of £4.5m. Given made four appearance for Manchester City last season, none of which were in the league.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are ready to offer £12m for City defender Jerome Boateng.

West Brom goalkeeper Scott Carson has completed his move to Turkish side Bursaspor.

Albion are close to finalising a deal for former midfielder Zoltan Gera on a free transfer from Fulham.

The 32-year-old was undergoing a stringent medical on Friday night.

Chelsea to rival Arsenal and Tottenham in £17m chase for Bolton defender Cahill

Gary Cahill could become Andre Villas-Boas' first new signing at Chelsea.

The new manager has told his top scouts he wants the Bolton centre half, 25, to partner John Terry at the heart of his defence.

But Villa-Boas may have to move swiftly to land the £17million-rated defender after Arsenal and Tottenham both drew up plans to try and sign him.

Stoke to rival Sunderland and Villa for £2m United defender Brown

Stoke are poised to enter the bidding for Manchester United defender Wes Brown.

The former England player, 31, is also wanted by Sunderland and Aston Villa and Pulis sees the 31-year-old as someone who can add experience and versatility to his improving squad.

The move may appeal to Brown as Stoke can offer European football and it would mean he would not have to uproot from his Cheshire home.

Pulis has a good relationship with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and would hope to strike a deal around £2million.

Ironically, it comes as Sunderland rekindle their interest in Birmingham's Scott Dann - also a Pulis target.

Stoke offered £8million for Dann and Birmingham teammate Cameron Jerome but the Championship side want closer to £14m for the pair.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce did have concerns about the severity of Dann's hamstring injury, sustained during the Carling Cup semi-final at West Ham, and had made a first enquiry about Roger Johnson.

But as talks with Stoke have stalled, Bruce has moved to take advantage of Birmingham's poor cash position and will be hopeful of securing a deal at far less than the £12m originally quoted.

Brown, meanwhile, has also been targeted by Bruce but is understood to be reluctant to move to the North East.

Sunderland have signed Arsenal midfielder Roarie Deacon. The 19-year-old, who was a free agent, has signed a one-year deal.

Carson completes Bursapor move

SCOTT Carson has completed a move to Bursapor for an undisclosed fee.

Both clubs have reached an agreement and the player has finalised personal terms with the Turkish top-flight outfit.

It brings to an end the 25-year-old goalkeeper's three-year spell at the Baggies.

Albion head coach Roy Hodgson said: "In the three months I worked with Scott I cannot fault his professionalism and dedication.

"He has been a good servant to the club and I would like to wish him all the best for the future as he looks to broaden his experience by playing in a foreign country."

Baggies Sporting and Technical Director Dan Ashworth said: "I would like to thank Scott for his efforts and contribution to the last three seasons.

"After the disappointment of being relegated from the Barclays Premier League he played a significant part in our last two successful seasons.

"It is a good opportunity for Scott to go to Turkey and on behalf of everyone at the football club I would like to wish him well in his future career."

Carson moved to The Hawthorns in July 2008 from Liverpool and was instantly installed as Albion's No.1 by then-boss Tony Mowbray.

He played 35 consecutive Barclays Premier League games in his first season at the club - a run that was only halted by a training ground hand injury.

The 6ft3in stopper was handed the honour of captaining the Baggies by then-boss Roberto Di Matteo in the wake of previous skipper Jonathan Greening's departure for Fulham in August 2009.

He was again a virtual ever-present and helped lead Albion to automatic promotion.

Carson lost his place to Boaz Myhill midway through last term and with it the captain's armband.

But the England custodian regained his place under new head coach Roy Hodgson and played a part in helping the club to their highest-ever Barclays Premier League finish of 11th.

In total, Carson made 118 appearances for Albion.
