Arsenal have reportedly turned down a deal from Real Madrid entailing that José Antonio Reyes be transferred to the Spanish giants in a straight swap with Julio Baptista.

Reyes and Baptista went opposite directions in the August transfer window, both citing unhappiness at their current clubs.

It is thought Madrid agreed to a £10 million fee for Reyes, but the Spanish giants now want Arsenal to consider a straight swap for Baptista instead.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger rejected that proposal and is hoping to come to an agreement before the closure of the January transfer window.

Reyes is currently contracted to Arsenal till 2011 and will be forced back to play for Arsenal if terms cannot be agreed between the two clubs
