West Ham are in talks with Arsenal's Lauren, skysports.com can confirm.

The Cameroon defender has been told by Arsene Wenger that he can leave Emirates Stadium.

Lauren is out of contract in the summer and is unlikely to be offered fresh terms with Emmanuel Eboue now firmly established as first choice right-back under Wenger.

Lauren has long been linked with a move back to Spain where he first forged his European career - before joining Arsenal in 2000.

However, skysports.com understands that West Ham have now mounted a bid for the 29-year-old.

Hammers boss Alan Curbishley wants to overhaul his squad and only has a short space of time to do so - and an experienced Premiership campaigner like Lauren could prove a valuable acquisition.

Lauren is yet to play a game this season after only just returning to training last month after nearly a year on the sidelines with a knee injury

Stokes: It was time to move on

By Mark Buckingham - Created on 10 Jan 2007

Anthony Stokes feels joining Sunderland is the biggest decision of his career to date.

The teenage striker plumped for a permanent move to the Championship side ahead of Charlton Athletic and Celtic earlier this week.

Stokes has joined in a £2 million move from Arsenal, after scoring 16 goals whilst on loan at Falkirk in the first half of the season.

He acknowledged it was a tough decision to make, but is happy to have agreed a three-and-a-half year contract at The Stadium of Light.

"It was very difficult, it was probably the biggest decision of my career so far," said Stokes in a press conference on Sky Sports News.

"I'm delighted with everything and I was happy with everything they had to say.

"It's a great club and I hope to do as well as I can."

Having made just one senior appearance for Arsenal, coincidentally as a late substitute against Sunderland, the Irishman admitted that he had made his mind up to move on prior to the start of the season.

Stokes added: "Really just in the last few months before I went to Falkirk, I thought I was better off to try and get first-team football.

"I went and done that, and from there things have developed and I've ended up here, which I'm very happy with.

"I'm delighted to be here."

Babel scotches move talk

By Alex Livie - Created on 11 Jan 2007

Ajax star Ryan Babel has poured cold water on reports linking him with a move to Arsenal.

The 20-year-old is one of the most coveted players in Holland and has been linked with a move away from Ajax for some time.

Babel has made no secret of his desire to head for a foreign adventure, but he is not looking to leave Ajax for another year despite reported interest from Arsenal.

"I am not occupied with foreign interest," said Babel.

"I want to focus only on football. When I play good things will come by itself, wherever that may be.

"I will play at Ajax next season. I have a contract for another one and a half years and as far as I know I will hold on to that.

"Just like every other player I have my dreams. In the past that was playing at Ajax. Later I found Milan a nice club.

"In recent years Arsenal and Barcelona have also impressed me."

Henry backs the Beast

By Alex Dunn - Created on 11 Jan 2007

Julio Baptista has revealed a pep talk from Thierry Henry gave him the confidence to fight for his Arsenal future, after a difficult acclimatisation to life in the Premiership.

The powerful Brazilian has struggled to demonstrate his quality in the capital thus far since joining Arsenal from Real Madrid, in the deal that saw Jose Antonio Reyes move in the opposite direction, but on Tuesday night against Liverpool he found his feet magnificently.

At the epicentre of all that was good about Arsenal in their 6-3 victory at Anfield, Baptista scored four goals and was even afforded the luxury of missing a penalty.

Baptista has made just three Premiership starts since arriving at Emirates Stadium five months back but after a heart-to-heart with his captain, he now accepts that adapting to a different style of football, indeed a different culture, will take time.

"A few weeks ago I was left out of the squad and Henry came to chat with me," he told The Sun.

"He told me to have patience, that it's not easy and that it took him a year to adapt and he went through difficult times.

"He told me how he would try and control the ball but before he'd even brought it down he had three rivals on him.

"He pointed out fouls that were yellow cards in England that would be red in Spain.

"I don't mind a battle but some things are difficult to understand.

"Things haven't been going well and I never dreamed I would score four goals for Arsenal in one game at a wonderful stadium like Anfield.

"I surprised myself but I'm starting to play more and more in the way I want."
