It’s understood United have been ‘pursuing Lukaku for months’. Even when it appeared he was intent on rejoining Chelsea, United still had a line of dialogue open with Raiola for updates on the striker. It must have helped them that Paul Pogba holidayed with Lukaku for the third successive summer, too.

United insist Lukaku was the ‘main target’ rather than Morata, who was a fall-back option. United were working on a deal for Morata simultaneously because they were under the assumption Lukaku was Chelsea-bound. Blaise Matuidi was a fall-back option for Pogba last year.

Some time over the last fortnight, it became apparent Lukaku was attainable and that’s why a Morata deal wasn’t concluded. United had a free run at signing Morata, so why not just sign him?

As the M.E.N. wrote in April, United touched base with Everton on Lukaku before they made contact with Morata’s representatives. He was clearly their preferred option to replace Ibrahimovic

On why Sky Sources are contradicting themselves on Lukaku: One line of information from Man United, one from Everton.

James Cooper of Sky will be getting the Man United £75m agreed fee, was always No.1 target, line from Man United.

Whereas Jim White, who has proven good links with Everton owner Farhad Moshiri, is providing the denial from a senior Everton source.

The bigger question is: Why would the clubs be sending out such conflicting information? Lots of possibles on that.

Perhaps Everton don't feel it's agreed. Or, if they do, perhaps they don't want that to be public knowledge.

Maybe there's hope that Man United and Chelsea could get into a bidding war, but is that really worth the extra £5-10m for newly minted EFC?
