Defender John Heitinga believes the idea of bringing Steven Pienaar back to Everton is 'unrealistic', insisting the club do not have the funds.

The South Africa international was sold to Tottenham for ¢G3million a year ago but injuries have restricted his progress and the 29-year-old has made only 16 appearances for the club.

Pienaar has been linked with a return to Goodison Park but his former Toffees and Ajax team-mate believes that is unlikely, with manager David Moyes working to a restricted transfer budget.

"I'd take him back but I don't think it's realistic," the Holland international told the Liverpool Echo.

"They would ask for more money to sell him than they paid us for him and we don't have much more.

"It's up to the manager and the board whether a few players come or not but Pienaar is unrealistic."

Surprising

Heitinga did not criticise Pienaar for his decision to leave - he also had the chance to go to Chelsea - but he expected the midfielder to have had more game time.

"I played with him at Ajax and he's got a lot of quality," he added. "It surprises me that he's not playing more regularly for them.

"He was injured but he did very well for Everton in the past.

"Everton is a nice club to play for and Steven made the decision to go to another club and it's his right to make that decision.

"You'd need to ask Steven if he regrets it (leaving). The important thing for me is that you're happy and you play.

"I heard in the newspaper he was going to leave and go to another team so you never know what's going to happen."

Brazilian striker Henrique has confirmed he is ready to join Queens Park Rangers.

The 20-year-old Sao Paulo striker is one of the most coveted young forwards in South America and had long been expected to join one of Europe's elite.

But QPR look have secured a huge transfer coup after agreeing an initial 18-month loan deal, with a view to finalising a ¢G5.5million capture in 2013.

QPR would need to get a work permit for Henrique and, although he is yet to win a senior cap, he is an ever present for Brazil's Under-20 side and was leading scorer at the World Youth Cup last year, which should go some way to helping him towards getting through the red tape.

"I know a lot of clubs are interested in me. But when I spoke to Mark Hughes and QPR, they made me feel very excited about their plans," Henrique is quoted by The Sun.

"I want to go to a club with ambition and to play in London would be a fantastic opportunity.

"The manager is known everywhere. He played for great clubs like Manchester United and Barcelona.
"As a striker, I know I can learn so much from him. I've always wanted to play in Europe and, for me, England has the most exciting league in the world."

Newcastle United are set to seal a deal for Freiburg star Papiss Cisse, Sky Sports understands.

The 26-year-old has emerged as one of the most feared strikers in Germany over the past 18 months.

He scored 22 goals last season and has already scored nine this term.

The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Blackburn and Aston Villa have all been strongly linked whilst Sunderland were understood to be close to sealing a deal last summer.

The Black Cats have again been strongly linked this January, but it is now believed that Newcastle are close to pulling off a transfer coup.

Cisse has been away with Senegal, coincidentally with Newcastle's Demba Ba.

Cisse is now flying into Tyneside on Tuesday to undergo a medical and finalise the deal before flying back out to Africa.

The deal, which will be worth around ¢G10million, is sure to shock many as it was thought Newcastle's only target this month would be a new central defender.

Freiburg have already moved to sign a replacement after bringing in Sebastian Freis from Cologne on Tuesday.

CITY OFFER ACCEPTED FOR HOWSON
Posted on: Wed 18 Jan 2012

CITY can confirm that they have had an offer accepted from Leeds United for their Captain and midfielder Jonathan Howson.

The move is still subject to the player completing a stringent medical and agreeing personal terms at Carrow Road.

Howson joined boyhood club Leeds as a trainee in 2006 where he has gone on to make 193 appearances in all competitions, scoring 28 goals.

The 23-year old Captain helped guide the Whites to second place and promotion in the 2009-10 season, which saw the Canaries take the league title, also playing a major part in United's seventh place finish in the Championship last season.

The England Under-21 international has also made 20 appearances in the Championship this season, scoring once before picking up a knee injury in the Whites 2-0 win over Millwall on December 3.

Howson made his Leeds United debut against Hull City in 2006, before becoming United's youngest Captain since the iconic Billy Bremner when then manager Gary McAllister awarded him the captaincy as a 19-year old in April 2009.

The midfielder also scored his first goal for Leeds against the Canaries in 2007, opening the scoring before Dion Dublin and Darren Huckerby secured a 2-1 win for City at Carrow Road.

Liverpool are closing in on Portuguese youngster João Carlos, according to reports on Wednesday.

The Reds have been strongly linked with a move for the 19-year-old and today the Guardian reports that the club have now agreed a deal with his club Sporting Lisbon, thought to be worth around ¢G1m.

The midfielder, who has been likened to a young Deco, has grown up in the same youth academy that produced Portugal stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani.

He was first spotted by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish when he played in the NextGen youth tournament last year.

Sporting rate the youngster highly but their financial issues have forced them to accept Liverpool's offer.

Although he has trained with the senior squad, he has yet to appear for the Sporting first team.

If the deal goes through, it will be the Reds' first move of the transfer window.
