Hughes to miss six to eight weeks with fractured finger
January 4, 2006
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Cleveland guard Larry Hughes will miss the next six to eight weeks with a broken finger.
Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said that one or two screws would be inserted in the joint area of Hughes' right middle finger to close the fracture. The surgery will be done in Cleveland later this week.
"We've done tests on the injury all year," Ferry said. "It just started to flare up. We're anxious to get him back at 100 percent."
Hughes got a second opinion after a quick trip to Washington, D.C. earlier Wednesday.
"Both guys said if there was a month left in the season, maybe even two months left in the season, I would be fine," he said.
The 26-year-old guard, who signed with Cleveland before the start of the season, is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 16.2 points and 3.9 assists.
"Had it been later on in the season, I wouldn't have even gone to the doctor, I would have just waited," said Hughes, sitting with his teammates in the Cleveland locker room after a 91-84 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. "But, I wanted to get it where I can do my normal routine. I haven't been able to shoot. I haven't been able to really work on my game like I normally do.
"Even during the course of the year, I like to shoot at night time, after practice. But, I couldn't do it because I didn't want it to get too sore where I couldn't play in the games."
Hughes started the first 28 games for the Cavaliers before missing Wednesday night's game at Milwaukee. Damon Jones started in Hughes' spot.
