Abductors make contact with family of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel

The Nigeria international’s father, Michael Obi, was abducted on Friday evening and it is now claimed that they have been contacted via two phone calls by the captors

The abductors of Michael Obi, the father of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, have made contact with the family.

The midfielder’s father has not been seen since Friday evening, but the family have now received two phone calls from the abductors.

Despite finding out the news of his father going missing on Saturday, Mikel played in Sunday’s 0-0 draw for Chelsea away at Stoke.

A family source told KickOffNigeria.com: “They called mummy [Mikel’s mother] and told her that we should not bother looking for Daddy in Jos because he has been taken to Lagos."

A second call from the abductors was also made to the family revealing the location of the car which Mr. Obi was driving when he was taken.

But Tony Obi, the eldest of the Obi children, refused to say where the car had been found.

He said: “Yes, we have found the car. I can't say anything more for now.”

Mikel had earlier came out to the press and appealed to his father’s abductors for his safe return.

The kidnappers of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel’s father have announced their ransom demand of 20m naira [?89,900] for his release.

Michael Obi was abducted on Friday after failing to return from work in Jos and the midfielder's family have now been contacted to inform them he had been transferred to Lagos.

Nigerian police have also found the car Michael Obi was driving on Friday after the location was disclosed by the kidnappers.

Babawo Muhamed, a close friend of Mikel, told the BBC: "Yes, they found his car and spoke with them which is a positive step forward.

"Hopefully, they will be in touch again. Mikel has been greatly affected by this. But he is holding on."

Mikel has previously pleaded with the kidnappers to let his father go.

"I just want to say to whoever has got my dad to please just let him go. He's an old man and he hasn't done any harm to anyone as far as I know," he told Sky Sports News.

"I don't know why he has been taken and my family, my mum especially, is very sad and devastated about the whole situation."
