On 27 November 2011, the Welsh Football Association announced that Speed had died. The Telegraph reported that Speed had committed suicide by hanging at his home in Huntington, Cheshire.

Former Wales team-mate Robbie Savage said: "I am devastated. My heart goes out to his family.

"I spoke to Gary yesterday morning and he was fine. It's only three weeks since he came to see me dance on Strictly. No-one can believe it and we are all shaken and stunned.

"At the moment I want to do my 6-0-6 show tonight as a tribute to Gary but it is just sinking in."
