Wolverhampton Wanderers have started initial discussions with Newcastle United over the signing of Mike Williamson.
The centre-back, currently nursing a hamstring injury, is expected to complete the move in January after almost six years on Tyneside.
Williamson, now 32 and out of contract at the end of the season, is keen on the move to Wolves and Newcastle are unlikely to stand in his way.
The Toon defender was supposed to be on loan at Wolves until January 16.
But he was recalled by the Magpies after an injury crisis in their defensive ranks.
However, he was injured almost immediately in the build-up to the Liverpool game and ruled out for a month.
Williamson’s expected departure will see Steven Taylor remain at the club until the end of the season.
Taylor is back from injury and almost ready to challenge for a first-team place again.
Williamson proved to be a hit at Wolves during a five-game stint earlier this season and made his feelings for the club clear when saying: “It’s a fantastic club and I’ve always admired them from afar.”
Wolves boss Kenny Jackett has confirmed to local media in Wolverhampton that talks with Newcastle are under way to sign Williamson.
