Ross Barkley could stay at Everton with no offers currently on the table, says Ronald Koeman.

Everton manager Koeman had told the 23-year-old midfielder he would be sold this summer if he failed to sign a new contract beyond his current deal at the club, which is due to expire within the next 12 months.

Barkley is a target for Tottenham Hotspur, according to Sky sources, and has been urged to leave Goodison Park in search of Champions League football under Mauricio Pochettino by former Everton player Phil Neville - but Koeman insists the player is going nowhere as things stand.

"There is no offer on the table for Ross - that means he will stay at Everton," Koeman said, when pressed about the future of Barkley at a press conference on Thursday.

"The player has one year [left on his] contract and there is no offer. Maybe the club will not accept the offer [if and when it comes] because he is a good, young, English player.

"If somebody wants to buy Ross it's a big deal. If there is no interest then he will stay and be part of the team.

"I respect every personal ambition of every player. Still he is training with Everton, he is part of the team and training in a good way."

Everton finished seventh in the Premier League in Koeman's first season in charge at the club, but the former Southampton boss is hopeful of an improved finish this time around - if he can get more transfer deals done.

"If we can do the business we want then we're stronger than last season," he said.

"It's difficult. we're changing a lot at Everton on the pitch and off the pitch. It's important to grow but it is difficult because you need one or two big clubs struggling and then maybe you can make the next step.

"We have big ambitions. The end of the transfer window, it's more realistic to speak about what is possible. We have spent money, but everyone is spending and looking for the best players.

On the race for the title, Koeman added: "Teams like (Manchester) City and United will be stronger. We know it's a big fight and it's difficult to go through the big clubs."

Tottenham Hotspur want to embark on an end-of-transfer-window spending spree with the club ready to step up their interest in Ross Barkley.

Everton expect Spurs to finally make a firm offer for Barkley over the course of the next week, but chairman Daniel Levy faces a fight to sign Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.

Tottenham believe they can fight off interest from Chelsea to land Barkley, who they value at around £25 million, thanks to the attraction of working with manager Mauricio Pochettino.

With Everton finally set to complete a move for Gylfi Sigurdsson that will cost them almost £50m, Levy is ready to make his move for Barkley.

The 23-year-old only has 12 months remaining on his Everton contract and manager Ronald Koeman has admitted he expects Barkley to leave. Chelsea hold a strong interest in Barkley and could make a bid of their own, but Spurs believe Pochettino gives them an advantage and have left the No 8 shirt vacant for him.

Pochettino has worked wonders for the careers of several young English players both at Southampton and Tottenham, and has made it clear that he rates Barkley highly.

BARKLEY WILL TAKE PAY CUT TO JOIN SPURS

Ross Barkley will ignore the furore over Tottenham's wage structure to swap Goodison Park for North London, according to talkSPORT.

Barkley is prepared to agree terms on a £70,000 a week deal in order to sign for Mauricio Pocettino's side despite having turned down a £100,000 a week offer to stay at Everton.

Following the breakdown in talks boss Ronald Koeman announced that the England midfielder was no longer part his his plans which has ignited Spurs' interest.

KOEMAN UNSURE OVER BARKLEY

Ronald Koeman is unsure what the future holds for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

In early August, Koeman confirmed the midfielder’s future lied away from Goodison Park.

A hamstring injury has since ruled Barkley out of the start of the Toffees’ Premier League campaign, leaving Koeman in the dark over his future.

“I don’t know,” the Dutchman said. “There is no update about his situation.”

Asked if Barkley was in his plans for the forthcoming season, Koeman added: “I will wait until the end of August.”

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea remain interested in signing Ross Barkley before the transfer window shuts, despite the fact he faces three months on the sidelines.

Barkley has been ruled out for three months after tearing a hamstring in training with Everton and is expected to undergo surgery.

The timing of the injury could not be worse for Barkley, who has entered the final 12 months of his Everton contract.

Tottenham and Chelsea had stepped up their bid to sign Barkley in the last week, but the midfielder’s injury raised question marks over whether or not the two clubs would continue to pursue their interest.

Both Spurs and Chelsea, however, have implied they are still willing to negotiate a deal to sign Barkley before the transfer window closes in a fortnight, although it remains to be seen if they will still be prepared to pay around £25 million.

Tottenham and Chelsea felt Barkley could represent the bargain of the summer in the current transfer market and were attracted by the 23-year-old’s potential to improve as much as his ability to make an immediate impact.

Both clubs had been waiting for Everton to complete the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson before launching bids for Barkley, with Spurs banking a 10 per cent sell-on fee, £4.5m, of the £45m deal.

The fact Barkley will be missing for three months is a blow, but does not change the opinion of Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino or Chelsea that he could prove to be a superb long-term signing.

Spurs are also aware that they risk missing out on the player completely if they do not move this month and he moves on a Bosman deal next summer, when clubs will offer him big salaries.

Barkley’s home-grown status also remains highly valuable to Tottenham and Chelsea, who are combining Premier League and Champions League campaigns this season.

It is understood that Barkley went down clutching a leg during a training session and had to be helped from the field. James McCarthy, who is also hoping to leave Everton, suffered a similar hamstring injury in the same session.

On Barkley, Everton manager Ronald Koeman said: “He stopped training on Monday, it looks like the hamstring. But we need to do more tests to know exactly what the injury is.”

On Barkley’s future, Koeman added: “I will wait until the end of August.”

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a £20million bid for injured Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, but still face competition from Chelsea.

Despite the fact Barkley is set to be out for three months after tearing his hamstring in training, Spurs are readying a formal offer for the 23-year-old.

Talks between Tottenham and Everton are expected to take place this week, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy prepared to pay £20m up front, with the possibility of a further £8m in add-ons.

But, despite leading the chase for much of the summer, Tottenham and Levy do not have a clear run at Barkley with Chelsea also expected to make a bid of their own.

Chelsea have followed Barkley for many years and view him as a potential long-term signing who represents excellent value for money in the current market.

The interest in Barkley is not dependent on whether or not Chelsea sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City.

Everton wanted £50m for Barkley at the start of the summer, but were never likely to attract bids of that size with the England international entering the final 12 months of his contract.

The Goodison Park club still hoped to get £30m for Barkley a couple of weeks ago, but his latest injury has put them in a difficult negotiating position.

Levy did not want to pay more than £25m for Barkley, but now believes an initial fee of £20m, with the promise of £8m in add-ons, represents a fair price.

Tottenham banked around £4.5m from Gyfli Sigurdsson’s move to Everton, because of a 10 per cent sell-on clause, that could go straight back to the Toffees as part of the £20m Barkley fee.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will better that offer and the Premier League champions are not tied to such a strict wage structure, and could pay Barkley £100,000-a-week.

Tottenham see the attraction of working under manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has an excellent record for developing English talent, as a major advantage in their bid for Barkley.

Pochettino also believes he can offer Barkley better guarantees of playing time at Tottenham, even though he would start out behind the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele.

The defeat to Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday further underlined that Pochettino does not yet have the options he would like on the substitutes’ bench.

He is yet to be convinced by last summer’s midfield signing Moussa Sissoko, who could leave Tottenham before the transfer window shuts next Thursday.

Other than Barkley, Spurs also retain an interest in Fulham’s 17-year-old left-back Ryan Sessegnon and remain in talks with Estudiantes over 19-year-old defender Juan Foyth. Paulo Gazzaniga is expected to join as a back-up goalkeeper from Southampton.
