Arsenal have revived their interest in Jonny Evans and have made a fresh enquiry for the West Brom captain, Sky Sports News understands.

More now on Arsenal’s renewed interest in West Brom captain Jonny Evans.

It’s understood Manchester City, who had a bid for the Northern Ireland international rejected in the summer, have also lodged an enquiry.

However, Sky Sports News have been told no formal offers have been made at this stage, and West Brom are yet to comment

Arsenal and Manchester City have approached West Bromwich Albion about the prospect of signing Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans.

Both clubs failed with bids for Evans last summer but they remain interested in the former Manchester United centre-half as they bid to bolster their defences in this month’s transfer window.

West Brom are thought to want around £25 million for Evans, who has 18 months left on his existing contract at the Hawthorns and indicated to the Midlands club, currently second bottom of the Premier League, that he would be unwilling to sign a new deal.

Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is thought to be open to meeting West Brom’s asking price and Arsenal could also offer right back Mathieu Debuchy as part of the package.

City need cover for captain Vincent Kompany, who continues to be dogged by injury problems, and are prepared to offload Eliaquim Mangala, although the France centre-half was reluctant to move to West Brom last summer.

Everton are among a number of other suitors who have a watching interest in Evans but there is recognition that they could not compete with City or Arsenal for the 30-year-old, who wants European football and the chance to compete at the top again.

United sold Evans to West Brom for £6 million rising to £8 million in August 2015, since when he has impressed for club and country.

A ball playing centre-half, Evans fits with the way both Wenger and City manager Pep Guardiola want to play. It is thought Evans’ preference would be to remain in the North West, where his family are based, but he would be entirely open to a move to North London.

An interesting sub-plot centres around Alexis Sanchez since City are likely to bring forward plans to sign the Chile striker this month following a knee injury to Gabriel Jesus that could keep the Brazil forward out for two months.

There were reports at the weekend that City have made contact with Arsenal over Sanchez although the North London club’s £35 million valuation is thought to be far more than the Premier League leaders would be prepared to pay for a player they could sign for nothing in the summer. Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich are also interested in Sanchez.

Manchester City held talks with West Brom about signing Jonny Evans on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola is looking to add a defender and Alexis Sanchez to his squad this month, with his side still in all four competitions.

Sportsmail understands City representatives spoke to the Baggies this week, with Arsenal also interested in landing Evans.
It is believed Evans, who has 18 months left to run on his contract, could be available for around £20million.

Guardiola still likes Real Sociedad's Inigo Martinez, whose release clause stands at £28.5m, but it was said buying both the Spain international and Sanchez is not deemed feasible this month.

Manchester United are thought to have asked to be kept abreast of any developments regarding Evans, while West Ham have also taken a look.
Arsene Wenger claimed that Arsenal would not be able to match any offer City could present to the 30-year-old.

'If the decision comes to finances against Manchester City, we know we will be second best,' Wenger admitted.

Arsene Wenger has insisted Arsenal are ready to carry on spending in the January transfer window - and Jonny Evans is top of their wish list.

Arsenal are keen on West Brom centre half Evans and believe they may have the edge on Manchester City who are looking on the Continent for defensive reinforcements.

Evans, 30, is rated at £20m by West Brom but the Northern Ireland international has 18 months left on his contract, is refusing to sign a new deal and could leave in the summer for £3m if the Baggies go down.

Arsenal have been back in touch with West Brom and Wenger insists there is cash to spend. They have also looked at Mainz defender Abdou Diallo as central defence is the key area they want to strengthen.

Wenger said: “It depends on the opportunities we have. We can buy players. We are busy on all fronts, so overall I think we are open-minded. Every opportunity we have to strengthen our squad, we’ll take.

“If people want to buy some of our players, we have [examined that] - players who have less chances to play, we have done it, who deserve to play because they are great players, who have left us.


“After that, we’ll see at the end. There’s still a lot that will happen as usual on the transfer market.”
