Frank Lampard will merge Chelsea academy with first team to encourage youngster developmentFrank Lampard has agreed his Chelsea return and will signal his intent to give the club’s young players a proper chance by integrating them into his first-team set-up.Chelsea’s record goalscorer finalised his contract to take over as head coach on Monday after Derby County excused him from having to return for the start of pre-season training.
Telegraph Sport understands that one of Lampard’s first moves will be to allow the academy players to mix with the senior professionals at the Cobham training complex.
Lampard will also instruct the youth coaches to vary training times, so that he can watch either after or before working with the first team.
Former head coach Maurizio Sarri did not watch a single academy training session and did not attend any under-23 games during his year in charge.
But Lampard’s plan is, along with his assistants Jody Morris and Joe Edwards, to watch as many youth games as possible and invite academy players to train with the first team on a regular basis.
For the first time since Andre Villas-Boas was appointed and split the first team and academy, youngsters will eat with the first team and use their gym.
Previously, academy players have been restricted to their own building.
The prospect of Lampard taking over has caused excitement at the academy, where staff believe their efforts will now be properly rewarded.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi made the breakthrough into Sarri’s team before suffering injuries, but the duo were the first home-grown youngsters to make an impact on the first team since John Terry.
That is despite the fact the academy has been rated the best in the land for the past decade and has produced some of the country’s most exciting talents.
A lack of first-team interaction and opportunities has seen many of Chelsea’s best youngsters fail to make the final step into the first team, but Lampard is determined to do all he can to change that.
The news will be a particular boost to Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori, who have all returned from successful loans hoping for chances. It should also help ensure that Hudson-Odoi signs a new contract and that the next batch of talented youngsters do not consider leaving over a lack of opportunities.
Morris already knows a number of the players hoping to make a senior breakthrough from his time as Under-18s coach, when he oversaw successive FA Youth Cup triumphs.
Highly-rated Edwards is set to be promoted from the academy coaching set-up to take a place in Lampard’s backroom team, which will provide another link between the senior and young players.
Lampard was excused from reporting for the start of pre-season training by Derby on Monday and Tuesday, as he finalised his return to Chelsea.
The former midfielder had been willing to start pre-season with Derby, but the club decided it was better for him and the players that he concluded talks with Chelsea.
In a statement, Derby acknowledged the fact that talks over the weekend between Lampard and Chelsea had been productive and that an agreement was imminent.
The statement said: “Derby County FC have excused Frank Lampard from reporting back for pre-season training on Monday and Tuesday to allow his discussions regarding a potential move to Chelsea to be concluded as soon as possible.
“The first few days of pre-season training will be focused on fitness training and will continue as planned under the guidance of the fitness, medical, conditioning and sports science teams at the club’s Training Centre.
“On the assumption that Frank will reach an agreement with Chelsea to become their new manager, the club shall step up its efforts to find a replacement manager.”
