The Orlando Magic should trade Dwight Howard to the Sacramento Kings for $24, some glass beads and a chicken salad sandwich before they accept the reported trade offer from the Brooklyn Nets.
First of all, why cave to the demands of a spoiled superstar who says he will only accept a trade to one team? What sort of message would it send to Orlando fans if Dwight gets his way and the Magic get garbage?
And that’s exactly what
the Nets’ reported offer is … GARBAGE!According to ESPN, the Nets are offering the Magic Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and their’ first-round draft picks in 2013, 2015 and 2017 for Howard — the most dominant big man in the league. For the Nets, this would be like trading in an ‘87 Yugo and getting a brand new Lexus in return.
Are you kidding me? The Magic would be giving up one of the five best players in the league and getting a bunch of average players and some questionable draft picks in return.
On the surface, three first-round draft picks sound enticing, but in reality not so much. Let’s face it, if the Nets get Howard to go with Joe Johnson and Deron Williams, they will be contenders and those three first-round draft picks will be in the high 20s. And, believe me, any NBA general manager will tell you that it’s a crap shoot when you’re picking late in the first round.
Why should the Magic turn a fellow Eastern Conference competitor into an instant contender by taking a bad deal and sending Dwight to his preferred destination in Brooklyn?The bottom line is this: New Magic general manager Rob Hennigan should do everything in his power to work a deal that would send Dwight to a team in the Western Conference.
If Dwight wants out of Orlando, fine.
Hennigan should send him as far away as humanly possible.
