Liverpool have been begun talks with Arsenal to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Mirror Sport understands that Arsenal would be prepared to sell to Liverpool despite the long-running history of bad blood between the clubs.

It comes after Oxlade-Chamberlain turned down a move to Chelsea even though Arsenal agreed a £40m deal with their London rivals.

Liverpool have now made direct contact to try and broker a deal with Arsenal looking for them to match Chelsea's offer.

Oxlade-Chamberlain would prefer a switch to Liverpool where he would play midfield and believes he can improve and develop his England career.

He has told Arsenal he will not sign a new deal, has turned down an offer of £180,000-a-week and can leave on a free transfer next summer.

But Arsenal have decided to move on rather than want him to stay for the final year so are now open to a deal with Liverpool.

The politics between the two clubs started in 2013 when Arsenal tried to sign Luis Suarez.

Arsenal made a bid, knew Suarez had a release clause but Liverpool refused to do business and went public that the bid was £40,000,001.

Football Leaks claimed last year that Liverpool had put a bizarre clause in Roberto Firminho’s contract which had a £82m buy-out which could be triggered by any club - APART from Arsenal.

In contrast, Arsenal even have an unwritten agreement with Chelsea not to poach each other’s youngsters.

But now there appears to be no way back for Oxlade-Chamberlain at Arsenal, he could be allowed to go to Liverpool.

Let’s get an update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future…

There’s a real tug-of-war of developing between Chelsea and Liverpool for the England international’s services.

Chelsea agreed a fee with Arsenal for the midfielder but we are told a move to Stamford Bridge is a no at the moment. Now the player wants to go to Liverpool and the Reds are now in talks to sign him.

The big question is will they match Chelsea's bid? We've been told we are not going to get a running commentary on the talks but it looks like it's only a matter of time before Liverpool a bid.

What about Chelsea? Well they're working on lots of other deals but they haven't totally given up on signing Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Liverpool move for £40m Arsenal man

Liverpool have opened talks with Arsenal over a move for midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The 24-year-old England international rejected a move to Chelsea on Tuesday after a £40m fee was agreed.

Oxlade-Chamberlain sees his future as a central midfielder and feels he is more likely to get that chance at Anfield.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool are prepared to match Chelsea's offer for a player who would be available on a free transfer next summer.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has started each of Arsenal's four games so far this season despite telling manager Arsene Wenger he would not sign a new contract.

He was applauded warmly by the Liverpool's fans after he was substituted during Arsenal's 4-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

The midfielder has made 198 appearances for Arsenal since joining them from Southampton in August 2011.

Liverpool have been pursuing Monaco's £75m-rated winger Thomas Lemar, but it is unlikely they would sign both players.

Oxlade-Chamberlain fee is £35m plus £5m in add-ons. Same fee as Chelsea. But player chose Liverpool. Been leaning that way since last week.
