Kings Get Back Abdur-Rahim And Stojakovic
Sacramento Bee - 01/19 - 0:02 AM EST
Shareef Abdur-Rahim, whose jaw was broken by the errant elbow of Portland's Zach Randolph on Dec. 26, was expected to miss up to two months. But little more than three weeks later, he will attempt to play limited minutes against the Lakers at Arco Arena on Thursday night.
The Kings will also welcome small forward Peja Stojakovic, who has missed three games with a back injury. Stojakovic practiced Wednesday, and said he will play against the Lakers.
Abdur-Rahim's return is an experiment of sorts, a way to gauge whether he can contribute quite yet. Abdur-Rahim's jaw was wired shut Dec. 28 to fix his left mandibular angle fracture, though he won't have the wires removed for three more weeks. His biggest challenges will be breathing through his clenched mouth and playing without the "seven or eight" pounds he lost while being on a liquid diet.
"If I can play, I want to play," Abdur-Rahim said. "If (Kings coach Rick Adelman) tells me he doesn't think I can help, then I'll sit. But if not, I want to play."
