Rangers have signed five Newcastle United players on transfer deadline day, with all signing loan deals until the end of the season.

Gael Bigirimana, Shane Ferguson, Kevin Mbabu, Remie Streete and Haris Vuckic have all swapped the Black & White of Newcastle for the Light Blue of Rangers.

Newcastle United can confirm that Siem de Jong has suffered a pneumothorax (collapsed lung), similar to a previous complaint he suffered from while with Ajax in 2013.

De Jong has undergone surgery for the condition today (Tuesday) and is expected to be out for eight weeks.

The Dutch international said: "After four months of hard work getting back to full fitness it is such bad luck to suffer another setback.

"We are all hopeful that the surgery I have had will ensure I don't have any repeat of the condition in the future.

"It's very sad for me personally, especially since I was almost back in contention and feeling great. I'm sorry for my teammates, the Club and our fans that I'm not able to help the team for a little while longer.

"I am determined to come back stronger as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone for your support."

Newcastle's Cheick Tiote could be out for rest of season with knee injury

Newcastle's Ivory Coast midfielder is having the problem assessed and will learn his fate in the next 24 hours.

The worst-case scenario is that the 28-year-old will be sidelined for Toon's final 13 games in a big blow to caretaker boss John Carver.

Tiote suffered the injury while on African Cup of Nations duty, causing him to miss his country's penalty shoot-out success over Ghana in the final.

It caps an injury-plagued campaign for the former FC Twente midfielder.

Tiote missed the first month of the campaign with a hamstring injury, and has made just 12 appearances this season - only one since the turn of the year.

The unwelcome news comes after Toon's Dutch midfielder Siem de Jong was ruled out for at least two months after surgery on a collapsed lung.
