Sunderland 1-0 Shrewsbury: Adnan Januzaj seals maiden win for David Moyes

Adnan Januzaj struck late as Sunderland beat Shrewsbury 1-0 to seal their first victory under David Moyes and reach the third round of the EFL Cup.

The 21-year-old needed 83 minutes of a largely turgid cup-tie to find his range, blasting a right-footed shot past keeper Jayson Leutwiler to spare a crowd of just 13,979 at the Stadium of Light further punishment after back-to-back league defeats.

Having admitted his side is likely to be involved in another relegation battle after a pointless start to the Premier League campaign, Moyes may have welcomed the distraction of a cup game against lower league opposition, although injuries and a stagnant transfer market meant he was unable to make wholesale changes to his line-up.

Midfielders Lynden Gooch and Januzaj caught the eye in the early stages as they probed at a well-organised Shrewsbury defence, although without the necessary penetration to expose Leutwiler.

Januzaj and skipper-for-the-night Patrick van Aanholt both drilled free-kicks wastefully into the defensive wall before 34-year-old Steven Pienaar managed to create a little space for himself with a powerful 41st-minute surge towards the penalty area, only to lift his shot over the bar.

The visitors produced little threat either with Pickford fielding Louis Dodds' tame header without difficulty, and it was not until the stroke of half-time that Leutwiler was remotely threatened when he raced from his line to smother the ball before Van Aanholt could reach 17-year-old Joel Asoro's return pass.

Sunderland wasted their good work after the break with their inability to find a final ball, and makeshift central defender Jack Rodwell had to concede a 52nd-minute corner as Dodds threatened to show them how to do it at the other end.

Leutwiler produced a fine 58th-minute save to parry the impressive Asoro's snapshot from Januzaj's low cross, but it was Pickford at full-stretch five minutes later as he dived to is left to turn away Ivan Toney's stinging drive.

Khazri might have broken the deadlock with 10 minutes remaining when he fired into the side-netting from Van Aanholt's pull-back, but with extra-time looming, it was he who fed Januzaj for the Manchester United loanee to step on to his right foot and smash the ball past Leutwiler and win the tie.

Substitute George Waring should have levelled in stoppage time, but he sent his diving header from Junior Brown's cross wide from three yards.

League Two side Accrington Stanley knocked out Premier League Burnley in dramatic style thanks to Matty Pearson's strike in the last minute of extra-time.

Accrington created very little over the course of what was almost a goalless 120 minutes at the Crown Ground, but a much-changed Burnley were unable to put the game to bed, even after the introduction of Andre Gray in the second half.

Stanley sat deeper and deeper as the game drifted into extra-time, but there was always likely to be one big chance before a penalty shootout, and that chance fell to Pearson after a goalmouth scramble in the Burnley box.

The defender had no time to think about the chance, but finished clinically to send Accrington into round three where they meet West Ham at the London Stadium.

Sean Dyche made ten changes from the Burnley team that beat Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, and it showed, with the Clarets struggling to find rhythm in the early stages.

Accrington, however, failed to take advantage of the visitors' lack of fluency early on and soon came under the cosh when Burnley's Premier League quality began to show.

Michael Kightly went close with a free-kick and Lukas Jutkiewicz was inches away from tucking into an empty net as he slid in to meet a cross, but the teams went in goalless at the break.

Andre Gray came on in the second half and added some extra energy to Burnley's play, but he was denied by Elliott Parish with the best chance of the regulation 90 minutes as the game drifted into extra-time.

Burnley continued to look by far the better of the two teams during the additional 30 minutes, but Stanley looked comfortable soaking up the pressure and were able to whip in a cross right at the death, which pinballed around the box before Pearson's crucial touch.

Accrington's reward for their efforts will be a trip to the London Stadium in Stratford to play West Ham United in the third round.

Bournemouth registered their first win of the season as Marc Wilson's fine strike saw them overcome League Two table-toppers Morecambe 2-1 and reach the EFL Cup third round.

Morecambe had swiftly cancelled out Max Gradel's eighth-minute opener through Cole Stockton, and then almost went ahead in first-half stoppage time when Tom Barkhuizen hit the post.

But Republic of Ireland defender Wilson marked his first appearance since re-joining the Cherries last week with his first club goal since December 2010 as he fired in decisively from range in the 54th minute.

There were several nervy moments for a much-changed Bournemouth side, with Morecambe also connecting with the woodwork in the dying seconds via Ryan Edwards' header.

But Cherries boss Eddie Howe, who made 10 changes in total to his starting XI, will be pleased simply to get a win on the board after opening the season with back-to-back Premier League losses.

Soon after surviving an early scare when Adam Federici tipped away a rocket of a shot from Barkhuizen, Bournemouth took the lead with their first real attempt on goal - Gradel sending a low strike from the edge of the box in off the far post.

The away side looked to be moving through the gears when Junior Stanislas had an effort saved by Barry Roche in the 12th minute, but two minutes after that Morecambe drew level thanks to a tidy finish by Stockton, who steered the ball home from close range following a long throw.

Bournemouth dominated the rest of the opening period, with Roche making a double save to deny Benik Afobe and Gradel and Lewis Grabban miscuing as he met a cross right of front of goal.

But Howe and his men were breathing sighs of relief again in the last few seconds having seen Barkhuizen's fierce drive stay out via the frame of the goal.

They were feeling a lot more at ease shortly after the break when Wilson restored their advantage by cracking a shot past Roche from outside the area.

And Afobe then almost took the ball around Roche, who just managed to deflect it away with an important fingertip stop.

Morecambe subsequently went close on several occasions to netting a second equaliser, with the first instance seeing Wilson overhit a backpass and Federici spare his blushes by scrambling it away before it crossed the line.

Jack Dunn then hammered a shot wide, and in the last few moments, substitute Kevin Ellison saw an effort just pushed over by Federici before Edwards nodded the ball onto the top of the bar.

Fulham 2-1 Middlesbrough (AET): Lasse Vigen Christensen produces upset with extra-time winner

Lasse Vigen Christensen's extra-time goal gave Championship side Fulham a deserved 2-1 victory over Premier League Middlesbrough on Wednesday, sending them through to the third round of the EFL Cup.

Fulham, who made 10 changes for the tie at Craven Cottage, had to recover from conceding a goal after only eight minutes to David Nugent.

But they fought back superbly after the break as Julien De Sart's 54th-minute own goal and Christensen's dramatic 113th-minute strike sent Slavisa Jokanovic's men through to the delight of the home crowd.

In a match which started in 32 degree heat but quickly deteriorated into rain and thunderstorms, both teams made changes from the previous weekend's league programme.

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka, who led his side to a 2-1 Premier League victory at rivals Sunderland on Saturday, left two-goal hero Cristhian Stuani on the bench as he made six changes to his team in all.

Fulham boss Jokanovic went even further. He made 10 changes from the team which drew 2-2 with Cardiff in the Championship and handed 17-year-old Dennis Adeniran a place in midfield.

Perhaps understandably, Fulham took time to find their feet and Middlesbrough took full advantage, making a breakthrough early on.

There were only eight minutes on the clock when new signing Fabio Da Silva, a £2 million buy from Cardiff, crossed from the left and David Nugent glanced home a header from close range to put the visitors ahead.

The goal came at a cost for Karanka's side, however, as Fabio pulled up with an injury soon after and had to be replaced by George Friend.

Fulham created their first real chance after 24 minutes when Cauley Woodrow shot from close range but saw Brad Guzan save the effort with his feet - and then they really stepped up a gear after the break as Boro grew weary.

Woodrow again had a shot blocked after 48 minutes and with Adeniran and Adetayo Edun providing lively cameos the Championship side grew into the game.

The equaliser came after 54 minutes following a flowing move which ended with Ryan Tunnicliffe finding Scott Malone on the wing. Guzan made a stunning save from the left-back's deflected shot but the ball hit De Sart to end up in the net for a cruel own goal.

Five minutes later and Fulham almost snatched the lead - but this time Guzan was able to tip Woodrow's effort over the bar.

By this stage Jokanovic's side were well on top, also seeing an Edun shot deflected over the bar in the 78th minute.

Tiring Boro were dealt another injury blow, too, when substitute Friend had to go off injured in the 90th minute as the tie went to extra-time - not good news for Karanka ahead of Sunday's trip to West Brom.

Fulham continued to impress as Jozabed tested Guzan with a volley after 100 minutes and substitute Matt Smith thundered a header narrowly over the bar - before Sean Kavanagh's effort beat Guzan only to be blocked on the line by Ben Gibson.

The goal was coming and it duly arrived in the 113th minute when Christensen swept home from close range following another excellent low cross from the left by Malone.
