Gutierrez slams Newcastle United owner after release

Outgoing Newcastle United footballer Jonas Gutierrez has slammed the club owner Mike Ashley on Twitter after he was released by the English Premier League club.

The 31-year-old Gutierrez, had undergone treatment for testicular cancer earlier in the season and then returned in March to play again.

Newcastle ended a seven-year association with the Argentine midfielder on Friday after he had turned up for 187 appearances for the outfit.

"Two things I learn from my illness," Gutierrez wrote on Twitter on Friday.

"How you can support a player (Newcastle fans) and how you leave a player alone (Newcastle owner)," he added.

The Argentine also thanked his fans and supporters on another social platform Facebook.

"Thanks to all football fans and Newcastle fans for supporting me and trust in me. This is a way to demonstrate I always hear you. You are very important to me, football wouldn't be the same without you. All my effort and affection is for you!," Gutierrez wrote.

Ryan Taylor: Newcastle United released me and Jonas Gutiérrez on phone

Ryan Taylor has revealed that he was informed about his release from Newcastle United over the phone, before being asked to pass his mobile to Jonas Gutiérrez so his team-mate could be told the news of his own fate.

The duo were both in Northern Ireland, where they are undertaking coaching qualifications, when the call came in from Newcastle’s caretaker manager, John Carver.

“John Carver rang me and told me the club weren’t going to offer me a new deal,” Taylor told Sky Sports News. “I then had a chat with him, he’s a good friend of mine. I’ve spent a lot of time with John in and out of the club. So I had a chat with him and then he asked me to pass the phone to Jonas, which was unbelievable.

“I can’t really blame John because he’s under instructions on what to do.”

Gutiérrez, who has recently recovered from testicular cancer, scored the goal which helped secure Newcastle’s Premier League status on the final day of the season.

Both players had been informed that they would be being released at the end of the season some months before, as Taylor himself confirmed.

“I didn’t expect to get offered a new contract but it’s not about that, you have to move on,” said the defender. “The more important thing is that they can pick up a phone and call me or call my agent and say, ‘Listen, thank you for everything, we are going to release you’. That is more the way to do it.”

For a couple of days last week, Patrick Vieira was open to the idea of discussing Newcastle United’s head coach vacancy as a way of fast-tracking his own managerial development – before the interest fizzled out with both parties adamant that the other one had been the instigators.

There had been others, too. With Remi Garde it went as far as the interview process while Christophe Galtier and Jocelyn Gourvennec, two of France’s brightest young managerial talents, would have been amenable.

Yet Newcastle took a head count of these candidates – one of two of whom might have had a seriously transformative impact on the club – and went, instead, for Steve McClaren.

Steve McClaren Appointed Head Coach



Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of Steve McClaren as the Club's new head coach.
McClaren joins United on a deal for an initial term of three years, which could be extended to eight.
Managing director Lee Charnley said: "From my first meeting with Steve I knew he was the perfect fit for Newcastle United.
"I am delighted that we have secured the services of one of the best coaches in English football.
"He has 20 years' experience, including for the national team and at the highest level of European competition.
His most notable achievements include winning the Eredivisie with FC Twente and guiding Middlesbrough to a League Cup win in 2004 and to the final of the UEFA Cup in 2006.
"He has a proven track record of being an innovative and forward-thinking coach and developing and improving players, which was a key quality we sought in the individual to fill this role.
"Steve also brings with him a great enthusiasm and passion for the job, the Club and the city, which he articulated to me very clearly from the outset.
"This is a huge job which comes with considerable pressures and I am convinced that Steve not only understands the weight of expectation that comes with this role, but that he has the strength of character and professionalism befitting of a club of our size and status.
"Steve has been tasked to secure a top-eight finish in the Premier League and he is also heavily incentivised to try to win a cup competition.
"We recognise supporters' strong desire to win a trophy, an ambition which the Club now shares as Mike Ashley made clear in his comments on the final day of the season. Steve is excited by this and he has our full support in trying to achieve this goal.
"Our immediate focus will be on working with Steve to assess and improve upon our playing squad, as well as appointing individuals to his backroom staff."
