NEW DEAL FOR SCHWARZER

Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce Mark Schwarzer has today (Tuesday) signed a new one-year contract.

The former Australian international goalkeeper, who holds his country's appearance record, joined Chelsea last summer on a free transfer and proved a reliable backup to Petr Cech during the 2013/14 campaign.

He made his debut in a Capital One Cup victory at Swindon, and kept his place in that competition for games away to Arsenal and Sunderland. He also started in a Champions League home win against Steaua Bucharest.

That was his maiden appearance in Europe's top competition, and he was called back into action following injury to Cech in our semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid, performing admirably to keep a clean sheet, before ending the season between the posts as he covered for the recovering Cech. In total he made 12 starts and one substitute appearance during his first season with the club.

Thibaut Courtois says goodbye to Atletico Madrid

The keeper dropped in on the Atleti training ground in Majadahonda to collect his things and say goodbye to the squad. He’s returning to Chelsea after his loan deal finished.

Thibaut Courtois said goodbye to the Atletico squad this afternoon. He’s returning to Chelsea, where he’ll be next season, after his loan deal with the Madrid club came to an end. The Belgian keeper went to the Atleti training ground of Cerro del Espino with his girlfriend. He picked up his things and said goodbye, one by one, to the players who just a month ago were his teammates. Courtois also left his club car at the training ground.

Courtois played 56 games with Atleti this season, shipping just 40 goals and recording 28 clean sheets. In the three years he’s been at the club he reached the final of the Champions League and won the League, the Cup, the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.

Chelsea to offer Petr Cech vice captaincy in bid to keep him?

The 32-year-old has attracted interest from Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain following reports that Thibaut Courtois will take up the number one role at Chelsea next season.

The Belgium international has emerged as one of the most talented keepers in world football after spending three loan campaigns at Atletico Madrid, who went on to be crowned La Liga champions last season.

Amid doubt over Cech's Chelsea future, manager Mourinho is expected to offer the goalkeeper the vice captaincy following the departure of Frank Lampard, according to The Times.

Reports have claimed that Cech, who is heading into his 10th season with the Blues, wants assurances that he will be able to fight for his place once Courtois returns.
