Newcastle rule out loan move for Liverpool striker Carroll

Newcastle have ruled out a sensational return for Andy Carroll to St James' Park.

The Liverpool striker was linked with a loan switch to the Magpies in the January transfer window.

Carroll has struggled for form and fitness since his £35m move to Anfield 12 months ago.

But Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is only interested in boosting his defensive options.

He said: 'We're keeping cards close to our chest in the window, it'll be difficult for anybody going out and agreeing a price with my board.

'I apologise to the media now we won't be saying much in the window about the transfers.'

Lukas Podolski reluctant to gamble Germany place with move to Arsenal



Lukas Podolski has ruled out a January transfer to Arsenal. Kon Schramm, the representative of the Koln striker, told the Guardian that a move in the Bundesliga winter break is "all but impossible", citing the player's reluctance to endanger his chances of featuring for Germany in the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine this year. "Koln has priority right now; we have time [for everything else] in the summer," said Schramm.

Despite the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's protestations to the contrary, there has been contact with the Polish-born forward in recent weeks. But Podolski, who has scored 14 goals in 16 league games this season, is wary of trading his automatic starting place for a new beginning in the Premier League at this stage of the campaign, especially in the light of Robin van Persie's outstanding form.

The left-footed Podolski has 95 caps and has been a mainstay for the German national team since 2004, but he is faced with increasing competition from emerging talent such as Mario Gotze (Dortmund) and Marco Reus (Borussia Monchengladbach).

While Gervinho's absence for the Africa Cup of Nations would provide the 26-year-old Podolski with an opportunity to play wide left for Arsenal, in the same role he has successfully filled for Joachim Low's team in recent years, the player is much happier as a centre-forward. He is also very settled at his hometown club. On Monday, he revealed to Bild he was putting off planned nasal surgery so as not to miss five days of training.

A possible deal is further complicated by Koln's stance. The 10th-placed club are ?31m (£25.8m) in debt but will not accept Arsenal's mooted offer of £10m due to the player's importance for the team and his contractual situation. A third of Podolski's transfer rights are held by the club sponsor SolarWorld, which partly financed his ?10m return from Bayern Munich in 2009. Koln would thus only receive £6.6m, too meagre a return for the political and sporting fallout of selling their prize asset half-way through the season.

Keeper Mannone joins Hull City in loan deal

Goalkeeper Vito Mannone has joined Hull City on loan until the end of the season.

The 23 year-old Italian also enjoyed a loan spell at the KC Stadium last term, helping the Championship side to accrue 21 points in his ten appearances.

He returns to East Yorkshire hoping to continue that good form and to provide a boost to the Tigers in their bid for promotion.

Mannone has featured once for the Arsenal first-team this season in the Champions League Group Stage match away to Olympiacos, and ten times in total since joining the Club from Atalanta at the age of 17.

As well as being a regular in the Arsenal Reserves since his arrival, Vito had a loan stint with Barnsley in 2006.

Mannone, who signed a new long-term contract in January 2010, has represented Italy at Under-21 level.

QPR make offers for two new defenders

QPR manager Neil Warnock has tabled a £3million bid for Aston Villa and Wales defender James Collins and offered £2.5m for Manchester City's Nedum Onuoha as he steps up his recruitment drive.

Warnock has moved to test Villa's resolve to keep the former West Ham stopper with an offer to bring him back to London.

Collins, 28, has 18 months left on his current deal and has been in talks with Villa manager Alex McLeish over a two-year extension.

But Warnock is making a bold attempt to pinch the giant centre-half ahead of rivals Sunderland and Bolton.

Villa are under pressure to sell players to raise funds for McLeish and could be tempted to cash in.

Collins has been a regular this season, but could be a casualty of Villa's sell-to-buy policy.

Warnock is also battling to for versatile defender Onuoha.

The 25-year-old will be allowed to leave Eastlands this month after making only two appearances in the Carling Cup for Roberto Mancini this season.

Warnock wants the go-ahead to have talks with the former England Under-21 international, who earns around £40,000 a week at City.

The QPR boss admires Onuoha's versatility and is keen to use the current transfer window to bring in proven Premier League players.

"We will be looking to improve the squad in January," said Warnock. "I know what I need and I will go and get them."

Arsenal boss Wenger handed Podolski boost as Cologne striker stalls on new deal

Arsenal have been handed a boost in their bid to sign Lukas Podolski after the Germany international asked for more time before his contract situation is discussed again.

The Cologne star, who ruled out joining Arsene Wenger's side during the January transfer window, held talks with his current club over extending his contract which has 18 months to run.

But although Cologne said talks took place 'in a positive and constructive atmosphere', Podloski's request for more time could tempt Wenger into renewing his interest in the £15million star.

Podolski, 26, is enjoying his best season with 14 goals so far for his hometown club, and has has emerged as a leading contender in Arsenal's search for a new forward.

Chelsea scouts run rule over £35m Cavani as AVB eyes long-term Drogba replacement

Chelsea have complied a dossier on £35million-rated Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, 24, and Sportsmail has learned the club have sent scouts to watch him on at least five occasions this season.

Andre Villas-Boas has been working on finding a potential long-term replacement for 33-year-old Didier Drogba.

Uruguay's Cavani is one of the hottest properties in European football after his goalscoring exploits in Serie A and the Champions League.

Representatives of the 6ft 2in striker have made enquiries to the Barclays Premier League's big clubs in recent weeks to gauge interest in a summer move.

Villas-Boas will have the chance to view Cavani's prowess next month when Chelsea take on Napoli in the Champions League knockout stage.

Chelsea have also begun talks with Marseille over £16m-rated full back Cesar Azpilicueta, 22.

Villas-Boas has made a new right back one of his top priorities and could complete a deal in the January window.

Sportsmail revealed Chelsea's interest in the the former Spain Under 21 defender last month. Chelsea are also keen on Sao Paulo's 19-year-old Brazil midfielder Lucas Moura.

Skysports.com understands several clubs are hoping to land Manchester United youngster Oliver Norwood on loan.

Norwood has just returned to United after enjoying a successful loan spell at Scunthorpe during the first half of the campaign.

The 20-year-old made 19 appearances for Scunthorpe and his performances are thought to have alerted a number of Championship and League One clubs.

Norwood, who came through United's youth system, is highly regarded within the corridors of Old Trafford and is seen as a key player in Sir Alex Ferguson's future plans.

Ferguson is ready to loan out Norwood again so that he can continue his development and Championship duo Peterborough and Coventry and League One hopefuls MK Dons are all thought to be keen on the Northern Ireland international.

All three are keen to bring in Norwood on a loan deal until the end of the season and Red Devils chief Ferguson will now decide where he feels is the best move for the player so that he can come back ready to make the step up to the United side next season.

Robbie Keane: In talks with Aston Villa over a two-month loan deal from LA Galaxy

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has confirmed his interest in signing Robbie Keane on loan from LA Galaxy.

Villa have opened talks with Galaxy about a two-month loan deal for the Republic of Ireland international until the Major League Soccer season resumes in March.

McLeish believes the chances of doing the deal to bring Keane to Villa Park are "more than 50-50" although the move will not happen until next week at the earliest.

"We are having a look at it with Robbie and trying to pursue it," admitted McLeish.

"That is the latest although nothing is done and dusted yet.

"If we don't know by Monday, then it probably will not be done. That's why I don't want to say too much in case it doesn't happen.

"We are certainly pursuing it and at the moment, both parties are keen.

"I would say the chances are a bit better than 50-50."

Redknapp lines up £12m double swoop

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is planning a £12million double Spurs' shock title charge.

Redknapp has received the green light from chairman Daniel Levy to improve his squad after the club's superb first half of the season.

And he is looking to take advantage of Blackburn’s financial woes to get powerful centre-half Samba and elusive winger Hoilett on the cheap from the Ewood Park strugglers.

Redknapp has identified 27-year-old Samba as the perfect man to beef up his back four, where skipper Ledley King is fighting a constant battle for fitness and William Gallas and Michael Dawson are also struggling with injuries.

The Spurs manager was on hand to see England centre-half Gary Cahill score Bolton’s winner against Everton.

Redknapp made a failed £16m bid for the player in August, but will not try again as he is resigned to the centre-half joining Chelsea, who have agreed a £7m fee with the Trotters.

QPR have lodged a £6m bid for Samba, but the Congolese defender is not expected to be keen on swapping one survival battle for another - especially with Spurs fighting for the title, on course for a Champions League spot for next term and willing to up his salary to £70,000 per week.

Blackburn's owners, Venky's, need an influx of funds to keep the banks sweet and Spurs’ likely offer of the full fee up front makes a quick deal likely, if Rovers boss Steve Kean sanctions the move.

Meanwhile, Redknapp is ready to sell Vedran Corluka to West Ham in a £1.5million deal - to start raising the funds he needs for signings.

Talks were taking place on Thursday night to rush the Croatian defender's move to the Championship leaders through.

Corluka is out of favour at White Hart Lane and needs convincing about the switch, but Redknapp is keen for him to go at the start of a mini clear-out.

The Spurs boss also wants to offload midfielder Nico Kranjcar, defender Sebastien Bassong - who almost went to QPR in August - and Aston Villa and Everton target Steven Pienaar.

Tottenham will seek to take advantage of 21-year-old Hoilett’s contract position.

The Canadian, who has impressed in a struggling team on both flanks and scored three Premier League goals, is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning he could leave for nothing in the summer.

That would be a disaster for Blackburn, and while the Lancashire outfit value him at £9m, Spurs are likely to make an initial bid of around £6m, believing Rovers have little option but to try to cash in on a depreciating asset.

Sneijder expects to stay
Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder does not think he will leave in the January transfer window, but has not completely ruled out a move.

The Dutchman was throughout last summer repeatedly linked with Manchester United and the defending Premier League champions' recent blip had led to renewed speculation.

United are thought to be lacking a creative influence in midfield and, with Michael Carrick struggling and Tom Cleverley injured, Sneijder is viewed as a solution.

Reports this week say Inter sporting director Marco Branca has held talks with United regarding the playmaker, with the Italian club possibly looking to raise funds for Carlos Tevez.

But the player himself told Voetbal International: "If I must give a percentage for it, I think I am 90 per cent certain I will stay [until at least the summer].

"I enjoy myself here at the moment and at this point I don't have anything to choose from.

"I don't say that I am 100% certain, because something unexpected can always happen."
