Former England captain Alan Shearer, speaking on BBC Radio 5 live, said:
"I am shocked and amazed - I'm really surprised.
"Let's face it, Capello has taken England to the European Championship but if he doesn't want to go then we need to get someone in who does care.
"I think the FA took swift and decisive action [on John Terry] and we know Capello didn't agree.
"I have to say I am surprised at the decision - you have an England team who have a chance of being successful but Fabio doesn't want that. It gives the FA time to get someone in who wants to be there.
"After the World Cup in any other job he might have gone had it not been for his salary.
"England should be managed by an Englishman. Harry is an outstanding candidate, Roy Hodgson is in there too.
"Now is the time to build a good structure."
