Transfer news: Clement Grenier will not be joining Newcastle from Lyon

Clement Grenier's agent insists that the Lyon midfielder will not be joining Newcastle in the January transfer window,

as he does not want to be regarded as Yohan Cabaye's replacement.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew was keen to bolster his midfield options ahead of Friday's deadline after losing playmaker Cabaye in a £23m deal to Paris St Germain.

Pardew appeared confident of landing the 23-year-old from the Stade Gerland side, but Sky sources revealed earlier that Lyon had rejected a bid from Newcastle.

And now Grenier's agent, Frederic Guerra, has confirmed that his client will remain at the Ligue 1 club.

"It is not easy to say no to a big club like Newcastle but Clement is finally decided to stay in Lyon," Guerra told Le 10 Sport.

"Clement would have arrived at Newcastle - not as Clement Grenier but as Yohan Cabaye's replacement.

"I have the upmost respect for a player of Cabaye's quality. But who deserves to have that tag?

"As his agent I ask is he worth half the price of Cabaye?

"For all those reasons it has led us to decline the offer from Newcastle.

"The conditions of the deal did not seem fair."

Transfer window 2014: Man City want Porto's Mangala & Fernando

Manchester City are attempting to sign Porto pair Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini was cagey about new arrivals after the 5-1 win at Tottenham on Wednesday.
However, both players may join the Premier League leaders before the transfer window closes on Friday.
France defender Mangala, 22, is rated at £35m and is one of Europe's most coveted talents, while Fernando, 26, would add to City's midfield resources.
Mangala is also attracting attention  from Manchester United and Paris St-Germain.
If he moves to Etihad Stadium, it reopens the possibility of a loan move for England defender Joleon Lescott,
who has played just eight Premier League games this season and has been a target for West Ham United.
Fernando was the subject of interest from Everton on deadline day last August, when manager Roberto Martinez attended a work permit hearing before the deal fell through.
He has also been linked with a move to AC Milan.

Transfer news: Chelsea close to completing Kurt Zouma deal with St Etienne

Sky sources understand that Chelsea are close to completing the signing of Kurt Zouma from St Etienne.

The 19-year-old defender is expected to seal his switch to Stamford Bridge before being loaned back to the French club for the remainder of the season.

Reports suggest that Zouma will sign a five-year deal after Chelsea agreed a fee in the region of £12.5m,

which would make the Blues the biggest spenders in the transfer window so far.

Sky sources understand that West Ham have made a last-gasp bid to sign Fulham target Kostas Mitroglou. Fulham reportedly agreed a fee with Olympiakos for the 25-year-old, but their London rivals are attempting to hijack the move.
