Rooney resolves 'issues' over gambling debts
Wayne Rooney has resolved his 'outstanding issues' with a gambling company, it was announced on Saturday night.
The Manchester United star reportedly ran up a debt of some £700,000, but company Goldchip said that, after talks with Rooney's management, the matter was 'now closed'.
In a statement to the Press Association, Goldchip said: 'Following recent press stories Goldchip is pleased to state that outstanding issues between the company and Wayne Rooney have now been fully resolved as a result of talks between Stephen Smith and Paul Stretford of Proactive Sports Management.
'The matter is now closed and there will be no further comment.'
Rooney, who earns an estimated £50,000 a week on the pitch and millions more a year from sponsorship deals, was one of a number of England players said to be involved in betting on sports other than their own, according to last week's Sunday Mirror.
In the wake of the claims, reported in the Sunday Mirror, the 20-year-old dismissed speculation about a rift with England strike partner Michael Owen over the alleged betting ring.
Reports suggested the young star was furious with Owen for letting him get sucked so heavily into the gambling scene.
