Chairman Quinn hits out at rumours
Niall Quinn has responded to transfer speculation in today's newspapers.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has hit out at reports in this morning's media inferring that the club were proactively attempting to move on Asamoah Gyan.

Such rumours have drawn the ire of the Stadium of Light chief, who took the rare step of issuing a statement.

"I'm sorry that our fans have to read the endless speculation that appears in the press at this time of year," he told safc.com.

"Normally we don't comment on any of it as there's so much - for instance we've been linked to over 40 players in the last month or so alone.

"However, the suggestion that we have spoken to an agent to sell this player on our behalf is embarrassing to all concerned.

"I hope our fans would be smart enough to realise that this is probably some other club or outside agents' way of attempting to destabilise our relationship with one of our players."

Meanwhile the club remain active in the transfer market and are in talks with several potential summer acquisitions.

Quinn added: "What I can say is that we are in a number of meaningful negotiations to bring players in and when there's anything definitive to report it will be on our club website for our fans to read."

De Laet in Norwich medical
Lambert closes on United defender

Skysports.com understands Norwich are closing in on the loan signing of Manchester United defender Ritchie de Laet.

De Laet impressed during loan spells with Championship trio Preston, Sheffield United and Portsmouth last season.

The 22-year-old is highly-rated at Old Trafford and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes a loan spell in the Premier League is the next stage in the defender's development.

A number of clubs are believed to have expressed an interest in signing De Laet, but Norwich look set to win the race for his signature.

Canaries boss Paul Lambert is thought to be a big admirer of the Belgium international and is keen to bring him to Carrow Road.

The Premier League new boys have lined up a season-long loan deal for De Laet and if the former Stoke man seals the move he will become Norwich's fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of James Vaughan, Steve Morison and Elliott Bennett.

Chelsea have £22m Modric bid snubbed

Chelsea have had a £22 million bid for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric rejected by the north London club, according to reports.

The bid was dismissed out of hand by Spurs within two hours of it being received, but Chelsea are expected to return soon with an improved bid.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is believed to be looking to rebuild the squad at Stamford Bridge while simultaneously reducing its average age, after a relatively disappointing campaign which saw the club lose out to Manchester United in both the Premier League and Champions League.

At 25, Modric would appear to fit the bill on both counts, although Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has previously insisted that club chairman Daniel Levy has vowed not to sell the Croatian playmaker this summer at any price.

"If clubs the size of Manchester United and Chelsea are prepared to offer him Champions League football and massive wages, you would have to be very naive to think it wouldn't turn Luka's head," Redknapp acknowledged recently. "But I have been assured by the chairman that he is not prepared to sell him under any circumstances.

"And it's fair to say he's not happy about the unwanted attention and continuing speculation surrounding Luka.

"I have said on many occasions he is irreplaceable and it would be a massive disaster for the club if he was allowed to leave."

Modric has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane this summer after the club failed to secure qualification for the Champions League, and has hardly distanced himself from such speculation with some of his recent quotes.

"I'm a Tottenham player and will be in London on July 7 to begin preparing for the season," Modric has been quoted as saying. "But I want to say that transfers could occur later. In England it is often the case they happen on the last day of the transfer period, August 31.

"So it is pointless to worry about anything now. If my situation changes after the start of preparation it would not be a problem."

Modric joined Tottenham from Dynamo Zagreb in 2008 for a fee in the region of £16m.
